Wow, 2nd Gens Are Really Holding Their Value

Carvana keeps making offers on my 15 Taco, from April 6 to May 6 they jumped their offer up $2200 bucks and it was already a decent offer.

That bodes well that people are still really wanting a reasonably simple NA gasser over the new 4th gen hybrid or turbo model.

 

carvana is good to sell to but not buy from. Thats what I do.

 

I'm holding out for a $75k offer on my regular cab! I saw a 3G SX access cab list for $26k it was a 2022 and 4wd I think, which was the 3G I wanted. I still think those are nice trucks, but I think I'd rather have the 4G never drove a 4G. The past couple of weeks I could have put a deposit down on 2 or 3 different 4G Xtracab SR 4x4s but didn't, kind of waiting for an SR5. Maybe I'm not as motivated to buy as I thought. The 3G, and if I found an AC 2G are tempting because there is something I like about that platform.

 

Older vehicles that are simpler, more reliable, and cheaper to repair will likely continue to hold/increase in value.

New vehicle prices are insane, they lose 10-30% of their value as soon as you drive them off the lot, they are super complex & expensive to repair & insure, so many components on the engine & drivetrain are made of plastic that crumbles to dust in 10-15 years, many repair parts for them are on constant intergalactic backorder or are unobtanium, etc.

 

For me it's also having owned the truck 12.5 years, I know what I have and will probably get going forward. Some stuff can't be predicted of course..

 

the 4.0 tacomas and the 5.7 tundras will do nicely over the next decade. super reliable and easy to work on

 

Any problem with the 4.7s?
I know mileage to power makes more sense on the 5.7, but I usually see the smaller ones on the marketplace.

 

6 months ago i bought a 2015 trd offroad, 87k miles, from rust free AZ shipped to MA, for 26.9k, out the door it was just under 30k, as a point of reference

they offered me 2,000 for my 2004 4runner, coworker bought it for $3500

 

I had an 06 4.7 DCLB.

It’s essentially an over sized Tacoma. But not by much. Can’t remember off the top of my head but I think it’s 3” wider and a couple inches longer. Not many though. The couple inches are huge in terms of cab space though. Those couple inches also add up off road too so it’s give and take.

Milage is same as Tacoma. 15-17 winter and 17-19 summer.
Tow rating is slightly higher. Not by enough to really be different.
They have a timing belt instead of a timing chain.
Reliability is just as good. Plenty of examples of 300-400k+ rigs on the tundra forums.

Rear ends are weak. Ask me how I know.

 

I bought my 06 DCLB in 2020. It had 149k miles on it. Paid just under $15k for it. I think I got a fair deal. Emphasis on FAIR.

 

Maybe it just depends on the car. The offers they're giving me for our CRZ and CRV are way, way below market value - which makes sense since they need to make a profit.

I very easily and quickly sold my CRZ for over $2k more than what they would have given me. We'll be selling the CRV soon as well and I expect I'll be able to sell it quickly for $4k more than what Carvana is offering.

 

I should also add that mine had the frame replaced in 2018, so that was mint. But the truck had a slow leaking headgasket. Wish I had know that before I bought it

 

I think it’s a combination of multiple factors - perfect blend of simplicity with just enough modern features, easy to work on, proven reliability, 1GR-FE engine, and finally their styling just looks fantastic and (in my unbiased opinion) far superior to any truck offered new to buy today.

 

I mean, its kinda the same reason for the appeal of kei trucks. Just dead simple vehicles. Small, easy to work on. Its really the same reason for the hype behind the Slate Trucks and the Telo trucs.

 

I picked up this 2015 TRD OR with 55k miles for $29k a couple of months ago. As other people have said in this thread, the reliability and ease of working on these trucks is the real bonus over shelling out far more on unproven newer trucks. It's parked in my barn next to my 2000 TRD OR and I have no intention of selling either of them any time soon....

 

Fr, and with a simple head unit upgrade I don't even feel like I'm missing out on a more modern interior.

 

LOL I was just thinking about this the other day wondering if I made the right decision...while it would have made a lot more sense financially, glad I didn't hold out to buy your truck, sounds like I'd still be waiting.

Was a lot of work bringing a high mile highway queen back to new but pretty happy with what I did wind up with. I just can't get in to new trucks...I've come to the conclusion the 2G Tacoma is Toyota's OBS Ford or GMT400 GM.

I got my 2013 DCSB on June 1, 2023. It had been on the car lot’s website for 12 hours and I had a dying 2006 Frontier. The Tacoma had 100K, and the one owner was anal beyond belief. Did every service on the dot, and even scheduled an appointment to replace the cabin air filter (and nothing else). Although it’s a New Mexico truck, somehow he finagled Toyota into replacing the frame (it’s immaculate).

I could not be happier. Plus, my mechanic has several Tacomas, and he says it’s about the cleanest he’s seen. I gave $24 K for it, and got $5K for the Frontier. Drove in with a disaster and left with a Unicorn.

 

I just got my car out of the paint shop today so I can run down a test drive a 250. Some moron back into me while I was parked in a parking spot at the local grocery store. He got to eat the entire bill including a rental for 10 days. [Jeep Sahara] He just wanted me to ''touch it up with some paint.'' Yeah, no, it'll be done right.........

He couldn't hear my laying on the horn, I realized later it was probably because his trucks collision alert was telling him ''stop you idiot'' over and over.
