    Re the poll:

It's kinda surprising to me that so many people voted for Wyoming.
    Have you been there?
I spent a semester at the Univ of Wyoming, Laramie (Go Cowboys!).
The elevation at Laramie isn't far short of a mile and a half.

Lemme tell you, it's windy AF there on the High Plains
(It also gets damn cold in Winter).

This is not much of an exaggeration:

Wyoming is great, but hang onto your hat!

I think most underestimate Montana

Everything has to be strapped down here for the winds. My parents had snow on Monday and Tuesday and 90 got shut down from the same storm out in Billings.

I think Montana also holds the greatest daily temperature swings if I'm not mistaken.

Fun fun... For a few months of the year

There is a good reason all of my choices were SOUTH of the Mason-Dixon Line...
I don't do cold and I don't like that cold ass wind

    :fistbump:

You are up against the mountains though, which should moderate the wind a bit?
I suspect that a little bit east of you it's even worse.
If I went west of Laramie an hour's drive to Centennial, I'd be up in the folds and spurs of the Medicine Bow Range.
Still a lot of wind, but significantly less.

The wind can really get up a head of steam (so to speak) on the High Plains, with nothing much to obstruct it.

Pennsylvania is so rugged with ridges and valleys (and trees, lotsa trees) that we don't have a complaint coming when it comes to wind.

It's not always cold. Just like 80% of the time :bananadead:

This is also why I picked places with warmth and rocks. Oregon being a small exception just because everything seems to grow there and that would be really nice.
Compared to the mountains we are in the valley and exist within a bowl. The mountains you see are uninhabited and pretty vertical and our wind comes from all directions so it can shift between warm and cold depending on where it comes from. We thankfully do not often get wind coming off the mountain at us.

We're at 3000ft and the peaks are 10k.

And yes, east of the mountain range and just the whole rest of the state is totally worse. Worse winds, colder temps, people, etc...

Man I need a real vacation... :annoyed:

I forgot to say, it's a regular thing for I-80 to be closed east of Laramie, even as late as June.
Due to snow on the pass over the Front Range towards Cheyenne.
Usually only for a day, maybe two, but still...

I've never been. Never been to a cold state in the winter either. Part of thinks I could handle it, but I'd probably die. I like that there aren't many people in the state. Huge fan of not many people.

Oh, I bet you could survive Montana or Wyoming, as long as you took the weather seriously.
Gotta be prepared for wide swings in temperature.

Cabin Fever may be another matter

I'd like to experience it sometime. I'd definitely keep a duffle with cold weather gear with me at all times.

I'd just need some coffee, booze, and a fire, and I'll be good.

I definitely agree about States that are "too popular", expensive or crazy. I actually love cold weather and mountains, which is why my original Top 5 States are my top 5 :)
