Is the Tacoma moving in a favorable direction (1st gen to 4th gen)??

Discussion in '4th Gen. Tacomas (2024+)' started by yotadust, Apr 24, 2025.

?

Toyota is selling brand new Tacos gen 1 thru 4 for 4th gen price. Pick one...

  1. 1st gen

  2. 2nd gen

  3. 3rd gen

  4. 4th gen

Most likely not turbo lag, but programming in the throttle by wire.

wow everybody is beating the 4th gen. Do you think it is because there are more owners voting for their own truck or 4th gen owner are voting for other gens??

It’s clearly due to people that have no disposable money and they secretly want the 4th gen but can’t get it.

1st gen might be the most durable and long-lasting Tacoma, but its towing and hauling isn't enough for me. I never bought a 1st gen because it wouldn't do the things I needed a truck to do.

2nd gens are a good compromise for me. They come close enough to 1/2 ton capability in a smaller size. The 2.7L 4 banger is a durable engine, but I need the 4.0. It might not last as long as the 2.7 and it doesn't get great fuel mileage, but it's proven and powerful enough.

I like everything about the 3rd gens except the engine. Great trucks in every other way. The 3.5 engine should never have been put in a truck. The power band is way too high in the rpm range to do truck things. It makes a good sports car engine.

The 4th gen has the potential to be the best yet, but it's way too early to say. I couldn't care less about buttons and cup holders. I look at the drivetrain 1st. Toyota is moving in the right direction with the small turbo powered engine. It puts out plenty of power at low rpm. Just what you want in a truck. If you need power, you have it. If you want fuel economy you can have it, but only if driven conservatively. Push it and it'll run and burn fuel while doing it.

I understand the concern over the new technology, but Ford has been using small turbo engines since 2011 in 1/2 ton trucks. They had some growing pains the 1st 2-3 years, but for over 10 years they have been durable, powerful, and fuel efficient when driven right. If Ford can figure it out Toyota can.

We have a similar size 4 cylinder turbo engine in our 2020 Ford Explorer. I can go from 40-80 in a flash when merging onto an interstate if I need to and it gets 27-28 mpg on the road in a SUV that seats 6.

It is throttle by wire. It has much more throttle response in ect mode.

Throttle by wire. I think in at least 1st gear it does not let the computer go "full beans" to save on drivetrain. Can be quite interesting pulling out into traffic if you're not used to it.

Get the hybrid and it’s instant take off no lag at all. Plus you get 465 lbs ft of torque at 1700 rpm.

It has both. Someone who is smarter than me will have to explain the differences though :D

I don’t understand a manual in a truck. I totally understand a manual in a sports car though.
For me a trucks power and torque trumps a stick.

The manual is down a few hp and torque, I'd hardly call that neutered.

Tho the reduced redline is annoying...even if I understand why they had to do it.

    It’s a preference. I just think they’re neat.

That’s your preference. And yet here you are on a Tacoma forum, curious.

Yes that’s why I said “for me”. And what’s interesting about me in a Tacoma forum with a 2025 trd off-road hybrid truck? I like the new taco design over previous outdated designs of tacos and I prefer the Toyota legendary reliability.

Bet to the wheels the manual is making more or the same due to the parasitic loss from the auto.

Ohh right. I guess the old Tacoma jokes about power don’t really apply anymore. Carry on.

My SR5 has both. The button is on the 4wd shifter below the tow/haul. I think the higher trims have multiple modes.
