Hi! So im doing the timing and head gasket on my 1997 2.7 4wd, and there are two silver rings sandwiching the driver side balance shaft sprocket. They are a bit loose and wiggly, i can push them up from the bottom. Im not sure if they are supposed to have give, or if i need to tighten the bolt or what.
Anyone know whats going on there? Thank ya!

    As far as your Q
My internet guess is has something to do with oil lubrication
I’m pretty sure these are oil guides
The ‘play’ you feel allows oil delivery
    Guess

You cant, there is an oil pickup tube bolted in that you have to take down before taking the cover off. Which means lowering the front diff. But all i did was unbolted it and lowered it with a jack, not take it all the way out
