7 quarts of oil?

Did an oil change but mistakenly filled in 7 quarts of oil in my ‘23 TRD Sport 3.5L… usually diligent with 6.1-6.2 but was lost in the sauce and put the whole thing in.

How big of a deal is this? Are there any potential lasting damages that this can do?

 

Potential damage can occur. Undo the drain bolt and put it back after a couple seconds. If you have a clean drain pan you could drain a little extra and add back whatever is needed for 6.2 qts.

 

Yeah I think I should, if anything, just for peace of mind… honestly wondering what the worst is that could happen. Don’t want to find out though. Duality of man or whatever…

 

Maybe some of our more enlightened members can point - I thought I saw on here (? can't seem to find) some video of possibly russian guys or whatever overfilling an engine with a cutout window installed. They kept adding by specific amounts and it took muuucho more than the design level to kill the engine. Like almost filled to overflowing. The oil flow in the window was entertaining. Anybody remember that?

Anyway my point is, yes an overfill may do something, but in all likelyhood your amount probably won't.

 

Similar thought just occured to me after re-reading yours. Instead of the "oh shit" lol of the oil drain, since its a '23 6 cyl maybe try just removing the drain plug of the oil filter and get a little at a time. Should be less that half a qt at a time and you can fine tune the removed amount.

 

Just FYI….6 works. I usually buy a 5qt jug plus one quart when I do a change. Been doing that for years and every change I just pour in the 6 and be done with it, that always puts it right at 3/4 up to the top of good to go section on the dip stick

 

I got one of these jugs. I mark the correct level for each car I work on with a sharpie. Cap keeps it clean between uses. I also fill it as the first step when doing an oil change to make sure I have enough oil on hand.

You're borderline. Overfilling by 1/4-1/2 qt generally doesn't hurt anything, but you're closer to 3/4 of a qt. I'd probably drain out a little. It isn't rocket science, and you don't have to worry about being exact.

Next time I'd put in 6 quarts and call it good. For one thing you NEVER get every bit of the old oil out. If you put in 6 quarts along with the tiny bit left over will probably be perfect. At most you'll be a tiny bit below the top mark on the dipstick. Anywhere between the lines on your dipstick is fine. I never add partial quarts if I'm a little low. I wait until I'm a full quart low then add a full quart. Or if it's close to time to change oil just wait a few days then change it

 

Drain to the full line. Do it.

 

I've always understood that overfilling can lead to oil pressure issues, dunno if this is true or not..

 

Not that big a deal but I would still correct it. Get a clean receptacle and drain it all out. Then add 6 qts of it back.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

 

For peace of mind, you can buy a $7.99 oil extractor hand pump at Harbor Freight and extract the amount of oil you overfilled. Much easier and less messy than taking out your oil drain bolt.

 

Drain the excess, next time just add 6 quarts. Dipstick will show 3/4 full.

I'd drain a little out for sure.

 

If oil is overfilled to the level of the crankshaft, the crankshaft can stir up the oil and cause it to foam. Air bubbles don't lubricate. I don't know if 7 quarts is enough to do it.

There are oil extractor hand pumps which allow you to suck out the oil from the dipstick tube. That's the least invasive way without disturbing the drain plug gasket or oil filter O-rings. Example only (I have no experience with this particular product):

I keep clean empty 1 quart oil containers. During an oil change when I'm ready to fill, I pour out .9 quart into the small jug, leaving the 6.1 that I want in engine in the new large jug. The partial quart in the small jug I label with specs and date using masking tape. You can then dump the rest of the big jug in the engine without worry of over filling.

 

How full is it on the dipstick? When I change my oil, it takes about 6.7qts to achieve the full mark on the dip stick. I wouldn't bat an eye at 7qts at all. I've drained over 10qts from a 3.5 (highlander) that was running just fine.
