Roundabouts can work. Not sure they help with congestion. One big problem is the state started putting them everywhere and did nothing to educate the driving public. The other problem is that, from my experience, most drivers aren't thinking more than about 5 feet in front of their bumper, so they're never prepared for what's coming up on the road. My belief is that a big portion of accidents are caused by poor awareness. Awareness of what's around them and what's coming up.

Then there's the driver education system. It seems, they do little more than show a person how to point a vehicle down the road.

Cellphones are a huge problem, even with hands free capabilities. In Michigan people don’t clean the snow off their cars, it’s cold outside. Common sense isn’t very common anymore o_O

Just for context; I took drivers training at ABC Driving School in 73’ , real name, honest. Grew up in Detroit, even then the public schools contracted it out for cost reasons. It depended on what high school you went to whether or not they had drivers education with an instructor

Yup, '75 for me, but it was through the HS. When my son got his license, it appeared that the curriculum hasn't changed since the '70s, even though driving conditions have drastically changed. When I took him out, we were constantly looking at and talking about 'what ifs' and 'what are my options'. His instructor noticed and commented on it.

:pccoffee:  sixtys/wannabes/roundabouters. My back went out Sunday night. I've spent the last 2 days sitting in a chair and trying to do ANYTHING that might set it off. Major hassle because we have glorious weather and I have plenty of projects waiting. My luck will be that it will get back to normal tomorrow, when the rain is here!

There is a road near us, PA Route 222, that gets a lot of traffic. The state has been putting roundabouts in at the major junctions. If you go to one of those junctions with a roundabout, you get through usually in under a minute. If you go to one of the others you might find yourself in a line of traffic 1/2 mile long. Based on what I've seen on that road, I'd say roundabouts work.

I love roundabouts. I hate the clowns who rush them occupied (you should know what I'm talking about) and I must admit I laugh at the oldsters who freeze. I guess more scary were the two times I saw people plain erse going the the wrong way (counter CW)

, last few posts bring back old memories!
Think it was 1964 when I had drivers ed, "pappy Hunsicker" was our instructor, 3 on the tree standard transmission, and his statement that "Carl, you shift super fast, and Jeanie you shift super slow"!

Same same, but in 1974, our class had a VW Bug. I cannot remember the girl's name, but I sure felt sorry for her. She was all over the place. Pablo had been driving a VW dune buggy since 13-14 yo. Teacher was like "outta here" well except I just had to sit in the back seat...........and her name just came to me - Patricia - never did learn, pretty sure.

Been driving since I was 14, aced the test, then found out if you had lessons, your insurance went down. So I had to drive 10 and 2 and read all the signs outloud. Teacher was a German with no sense of humor.

First let me say I hate round abouts. I know lots of peeps love them but not me. Maybe it’s because most drivers I see don’t know how they are supposed to work and almost run into me.
I learned to drive on a 56’ ford pickup with 3 on the tree , no power brakes , no power steering. Was driving since age 14 with my dad. Got my license the day I turned 16. Took drivers ed but I was already licensed. Took it because completion of it reduced my insurance rates.
My first new truck was a Ford F100, 4 speed stick with the super low gear(sometimes called granny low) and again no power brakes or steering. Was 4wd. I remember hauling loads of green firewood stacked to the top of the cab and a trailer with firewood behind. Thought I was going to break springs or axles but never did. Good memories and lots of warm fires in the fireplace.

Carl: You might try offering them to a local member at a decent price. Or keep them for a spare set.

Then there is me, and I usually drive 5 cars in front of me. Not running into anything or letting anything run in to me is my plan.

Good afternoon. Sort of busy this morning with a Costco run. Salmon for dinner.
