Bell Housing Exploded

I think he's ON his 2nd Transmission because the 1st one left the chat. Only happened once.

 

Yeah, I see that now. I originally thought he was saying he exploded a second transmission.

Explode and crack/fall apart are two very different things

Back in high school ('70s), I knew a guy that broke his bellhousing doing a burnout in his 440 Charger. It started hopping and he stayed in it until...boom.

 

Squirrel broke its leg and went boom.

 

I love how everyone responded like he just asked the TW equivalent of his pet parakeet's head falling off, and whether or not this was a common issue.

 

I totally blew up a 1974 FJ40's transfer case once, shattered the case completely. I traced that to one of the shaft retaining bolts backing out so the shaft did also with catastrophic results. Amazingly, I sourced a new empty case and other then a few shims and a few bolts, used every part/gear from the old one as they were all in perfect shape. Sold it several years later to a missionary who drove it to Costa Rica and used it for years and years so it must have been fine. That one I should have kept, it ran the Baja before I bought it and came with OWN crates or spares like 3rd members and all sorts of other stuff. The suspension was custom and while bit stiffer, worked very well off road.

 

But can be related.
A festering crack and falling apart can look explosive at high RPM's moving down the road.

 

On Fox body Mustangs, I heard a steel bellhousing is a recommended upgrade once you go up on power levels. Apparently it's for safety - so shattered clutch parts don't pierce the bellhousing then pierce your legs.

 

Scatershields or 'blankets' were required at a certain level in NHRA and other sanctioning body drag organizations, even way back

Don Garlits losing part of a foot in a top fuel car led him to engineer the rear engine rail, which everyone eventually moved to.

On any car it’s recommended to reinforce the bell housing. When you’re pushing high horsepower and torque, the flywheel, clutch plate, or torque converter spins really fast and with more authority than your mom on date night. A standard bell housing is just cast iron pot metal and won’t stop things from impaling your leg
