The roof sheathing on my house (1964) are the boards they used for the foundation forms. 1" thick. Random widths, but all butted tight together. When I had my roof redone many years ago, the roofers commented how hard the old nails were to remove. But then said they like nailing into such solid material.

 

Yea mine is literal 1" x 6" boards. It's sturdy AF.

 

Yup. And very flat.

 

The good old days, a 2” x 4” was just that. Older homes timbers were milled with a big ass band saw, close enough. Just think about how much more lumber you get out of a log with modern dimensions. $$$$$$

 

I don't think mine are quite that old, but like Adam's, mine are true 2x10's. Even the subfloor is actually wood.

 

I got those old 1x set on an angle in my house.



When I had the plumber friend of ours helping me out on the half bath when he was cutting the hole for the thunderbucket flange he was like "just how thick is this floor!"

 

And your subfloor is on the diagonal. More sheer strength.

 

I got to tour a sawmill in Grand Rapids years ago, but a modern one. Logs in one end, and pre milled lumber out the other. They sticker it-spacers all up in big ass bunks and into the kiln . The dried lumber would go into a sorting area and pushed along. At the end some beautiful lumber, this was pre laser era . Pretty cool process
