only 91 or 92 here in Vegas. Winter i dont worry so much in the summer i feel its mandatory. this is my first summer with the 4th gen. but with both my 3rd gens, if you didnt use premium in the summer you would notice a loss of throttle response and power. ect was mandatory in the hot wather as well. hoping there non of that with the 4th gen

Premium only here. It’s like $6/tank extra. Seeing the dyno comps make me think it’s worth it

I figure that Toyota recommends premium on the identical setup in the LC and they’re the ones who did the bench testing, so I’ll err on the side of caution for a few bucks more.

Recent dyno numbers and getting 23mpg around town at least seem to support that choice.

This doesn't add up. If the powertrain in the Land Cruiser is in fact the same, there's no reason to spec premium fuel there when they spec regular for the Tacoma. They wouldn't intentionally spec fuel the engine couldn't handle; detonation melts pistons, among other things. It'd be a warranty cost nightmare for the company. Besides, we'd be be hearing about it by now, particularly from owners who run their rigs hard and the tuners who would have been studying the behavior on the stock tune.

It seems to me that they might just be using this as another thing to position the Land Cruiser as a more "premium" vehicle. It always has been Toyota's halo vehicle in the segment. It just seems a little odd that they wouldn't re-rate the engine on premium so they could claim the extra 5-10hp or whatever you'd get on 91 vs 87. Maybe the cost was deemed not worth the effort or some such.

It's all in the firmware, not the hardware.

If its spec'd for premium, that's what the stock tune prefers. If it's spec'd for regular, that's what the stock tune prefers. That said, the stock tune is going to have tolerances for adjusting either way. But for some reason, tunes that prefer premium aren't as happy going to regular, whereas tunes that run regular seem to adjust more easily towards the delayed timing of premium.

My truck definitely prefers higher octane. I’m leaning towards paying for the good stuff.

Modern turbos are funky like that. I'm not too familiar with the 4th Gen's mill but I believe it.

My Maz3 (turbo) runs fine on poverty-tane, but actually produces a good 15 HP extra on premium. And that's on the stock tune. That's the wife's car, and she has no desire to wring that fantastic little motor to its limits. Weirdo.

Meanwhile my Miata, a natural breathing econo four banger, gets royally pissed if you put anything less than premium in it. And honestly, who cares? That car costs me twenty eight dollars to top it off with 93. That's far less than putting 87 in the Taco

My 3rd Gen? Not nearly a big enough difference, and I'm on an aftermarket tune on that one. It eats the government cheese and says thank you.

Just my seat of the pants dyno but I put 91 premium in on my second tank and it feels way smoother and more powerful, will be running premium form now on.

15 gallons of top tier 93 octane gas is running $9 more out of my wallet. This is at the local Quicktrip I pass each day. I could swing over to CostCo and lower the price, but it’s a bit of a hassle and the lines there aren’t fun.

In return, the 2024 Tacoma off-road I have drives better, and sounds better. It sure seems like it’s tuned for higher octane gas. I’m going to run another couple of tanks through it before I switch back to 87 octane.

If I notice a major difference when I switch to 87, I’ll probably go back to 93 and stay there.

One thing is for sure. When you put your foot in it with 93 octane, it scoots pretty good.

Oh, that reminds me. I did quite a bit of KO3 testing with our floods and the 93 octane. The KO3’s are plenty sticky on wet streets. My tires are set at 36 PSI cold. They warm to 38 PSI pretty easily. Yesterday and today we were running close to 100F to the PSI was 40.

$.60 a gallon difference between Regular and Premium…….ouch………where do you live?
I fuel at Costco……get Premium there for almost the same price as Regular at Shell or Chevron…….i try to stay away from the really cheapy gas stations…..
I pull into the shortest line at Costco, with there long hoses, can more than reach the opposite side.

it’s more than just about the oomph……be nice to your injectors, O2 sensors, Turbo……

The placebo effect is strong. I don't doubt the potential benefit on a turbo'd vehicle, at least, but a blind study or hard dyno results would be a lot more convincing.

"I did this thing that I think is a god idea, and I'm satisfied with the results" isn't very scientific.

At an Atlanta suburb Costco. Premium is almost 30% more than regular.

I have either 5 or 6 Costcos here in Houston…….and the price at their pumps are ALL different……interesting, considering, their fuel all is delivered by same company…..
Do you know what the number one factor is?……….the price of their nearest competitor ……

$9 difference on a fill up………..there’s a LOT of places I can save $9 on, and break even…..

a 2024 Tacoma, will most likely be the 2nd most expensive thing you’ll buy/own

Premium is something like $1 (maybe more) a gallon here, and regular is currently in the low $3.XX range. It's kind of bananas.

And I know this, because I run it...in my unmodified 2nd gen...just to enrage people in this thread.

Stillen did the dyno testing and gained 20hp. There are confounding questions, but it sure seems like a significant gain. Even a few horsepower pulling my trailer and bikes uphill is noticeable I believe that’s on the SR low power model, too, which probably speaks even more to benefits for the higher power trucks but I’m not an EFI wizard
