Battery Life?

Had my '21 Access cab in for service the other day the dealer started talking about a new battery. I have about 40k miles on it. What kind of battery life should I expect? There's a wee bit of corrosion on neg terminal. I saw a suggestion somewhere that this might indicate approaching end of life?

If get “wee bit of corrosion on negative terminal,” the dealer tech should have clean it off. It’s part of service. It were previous posts about batteries in past. Your Tacoma is 4 years old with 40k miles, and original battery, recommend change it. If you are “mechanically inclined,” can change battery yourself. If not, have outside shop replace it. But some shops don’t install customer supplied parts, for some BS reason, have buy it from them, possibly price mark up.

 

Usually only get 4 to 5 years out of a car battery now days. I just changed the original battery in my 2021 a few months ago. The cold snaps we got made it weak and after a few months of starting the truck slower than normal it finally died. Walmart usually has the best deals on batteries if you are installing it yourself.

 

Toyota batteries are hit or miss. My original battery developed a bad cell at 33 months. Got a free new Toyota True Start battery under warranty. My replacement is now 6.5 years old. I carry a jump box all the time so I am curious how much life I can get out of it. Mainly for TW battery conversations.

As for corrosion on the terminals I use one of these regularly.

i get 3 to 4 years on my 2016. I am on the 3rd battery now.

 

I hit 4 years with my truck on May 14 and have the original battery.

35K miles

 

I got 7 years 60k out of my OEM battery..cold northeast winters

2021 ACab with 25,000 miles. I'm on my third battery.

I buy NeverStart ( errrr... EverStart from WMart ).... 3 year battery for $139.00

I replace it every 2 years regardless - and if you lived in Phoenix you would too.
I got 3 auto's in my harem, so every 2 years I buy 3 batteries....

 

Battery life is not just time it is also affected by high heat and cold. 5 years is often the time to change out unless you're in really hot place like Arizona, Florida then maybe 2-3. Wear latex gloves. I just remove cables, negative first off and last on. Use an old tooth brush and scrub battery posts, wipe down with a clean rag moistened with a mild baking powder solution. Throw away brush and towels after use. Easy and no need for special tools.

 

Good points and also do this:

Tie a piece of string or something on the other end of you 10mm wrench and tie off to something so when it slips
out of your hands you can retrieve it easily instead of crawling under and pawing around to find it.

My factory battery in my 19 went 4 years and honestly that’s pretty good for Central Florida heat…3 years is common. Be good insurance for you to change it, it always craps out when you’re late or not in a good place for it.

 

Great advise. I should have used masking tape a few times as I've lost favourite sockets and extensions down the engine abyss when working it tight tough to reach places.

 

What region are you in? For most of the USA you can expect less than 4 years. Particularly hot areas will see less than 3 years:

About to go through 4th summer.

No corrosion on my battery terminals.

 

I'm using a battery that has been handed down through my family since 1902. Still cranking strong through 123 years of service.

 

A spritz of WD-40 every oil change keeps the battery terminals corrosion free.

You can use grease too - but they the grease tends to get on you.

 

Truck build date 6/2022, just replaced the battery. Leaking terminal and check charging system warning on the dash.

 

Me too! Fluke, maybe IDK, didn't complain much when I needed a new one.
