So I believe that I have found the root of the passenger phaser problem that has been plaguing my truck for months. It finally became bad enough that I had to pull a valve cover and make sure nothing was loose or damaged, before developing a plan of attack.

 

Like normal Tacoma enthusiasts who love tearing off a timing just to watch the oil drip, I started the project promptly at 10:10 AM.

Intake tubes off, then draining the sides of the block.







Then this little switch for the radiator fan, desired to undress for me.

 

Not slowing down to worry about something so trivial, I pressed forward.

The Ron Davis radiator is a heavy lug, even drained. So I added some support underneath.

By the way, does anyone have a PN for the radiator bushings?





Once the thermostat manifold was removed, I pulled the passenger Oil Control Valve first.



Look ever so closely.







So then I did some testing.

You can hear the solenoid try to move the armature, but it is wedged tight.

I attempted removing the little piece.



I removed that piece then tested again with the battery. Then found two more pieces.



Maybe it is something internal to this particular brand. It is a Standard Motor Products/Intermotor brand.

I had some trouble getting a good prying spot, so this little trick helpd a lot to gently pry the timing cover loose.

 

Timing cover off, my next big question was if I had done a faulty Kelford intake camshafts/phaser installation? Timing all lined up, the phaser came off.



It has been stuck bothering me in the back of my head, since the install months ago because I didn't remove the timing cover and I thought it could have been my work. I was relieved to learn that my work was sound, but that the new part was faulty, and or the phaser itself chucked one of the white internal seals, that then lodged into the brand new OCV.




Either way, two new parts are going in, and the timing cover will be freshly sealed.

Well I figured it out. Went back to that OCV. Shook it by hand, and sure enough the armature jiggled back and forth. Something internal had failed.

 

If you give me the measurements for the old bushings I can make you some new ones if you want

While cleaning the old silicone off of the timing cover, I decided to finally address the notorious 2005+ 1GR-FE timing cover leak. I've been in there so many times, but never did it. Here are some photos and a video.


Here are the depressions which created an uneven mating surface. Whether it was intentional to create dealership work, or purely an accident, is unknown to me. Regardless, it is annoying, and can cost a small fortune to have repaired.

Here I applied tape, and marked the specific areas with sharpie.





Then I lightly sanded with 120 grit for a better bond with the JB Weld.





I used a 12 inch ruler/straight edge to clean off the excess.

@Dm93 I need your help my friend. Wiring schematics for the Oil Control valves.

2006 1GR. I know that the wires go into the E6 plug. I am curious which is the ground wire for each of those. To make sure that I have my Haltech wired properly. I may have found a problem today.

 

Looks like Blue/Black and Blue/Red are the negative side.
I don't remember which one is switched but typically the ground side is.

 

The ground is. Thank you very much! Confirms that I have those properly wired.

Now I just need to check the 12VDC side, for good voltage.

Apologies but I haven't been following this, are you using a standalone ECU or what is the issue?

 

Yeah. Been having most of the discussion in the 1st Gen Haltech thread.

I am troubleshooting the lack of action from the passenger cam phaser. In the posts above, I have a video of the failed passenger OCV. I also replaced the passenger phaser with an OEM unit, just because of the related issue, and because I was in there to fix the timing cover leak.

The Haltech is commanding x angle, but the passenger phaser is for the most part not moving. The driver side matches the command.
