Early Van Halen was great. I still listen to it work.
Sammy Van Halen was OK. When I heard that Sammy left Van Halen my response was, "The Red Rocker is back." I always have been a Sammy fan from Montross, , HSAS, Chicken Foot. The guy is just full of energy.
    That's my opinion.

I couldn't really decide. It almost depends on my mood.

I think the DLR stuff was more fun. There's definitely more from his era that I'll put on a boating/camping playlist.

The Hagar stuff I like tends to be a little more serious. I tend to enjoy it more when I'm driving, or listening alone.

I know this might not make sense. But, maybe it will to some. :notsure:

Side note, and this will probably sound even more nerdy..

The intro to "when it's love" always sets a mood for me. Like the beginning of some sort of journey. And, I always imagine some kind of beautiful landscape. Oceans, mountains, etc.

I'm not sure if anyone else gets that from that song. Or, any similar reaction from any song.

Maybe it's subliminal from having heard that song during a particular experience. I know there are other songs that has happened with for me, but I don't have enough time to even put a dent in that topic.

Here's where it gets extra nerdy:

The first time I drove to the Florida Keys, I kept thinking about this. So, when I got to the first big bridge, I cued up the song.

As lame as it probably sounds, there's nothing quite like listening to a song that makes you imagine beautiful scenery and grand landscapes while driving into such a beautiful place! And, I think of this every time I hear this song. It doesn't hurt that it ended up being two of the coolest days of my whole life!

I think I've always been a little weird in how strong of an emotional response I sometimes have to music, or certain songs. It's surely the reason I started playing bass. And, even though I'm not the musician I once was, I still love playing.

Sorry for the essay. But, I am curious if anyone else has songs that affect them this way.

Just wanted to add: this is approximately where I was when I cued up the song:

The street view images and linked photos don't do justice at all to the color of that water.

I listened to a mix of Van Halen songs for the rest of my ride that day, probably an hour and a half or so. Ended up in Marathon.

    Sounds perfectly normal to me.
When I hear an older song I like to think of what I was doing in life when that song came out.
I like older rock, outlaw country and blues music. Recently while in an MRI tube I was given the choice of what I wanted to listen to. I chose the Blues music. I found it to be very relaxing.
When we did the Moab trip, driving in Colorado, when I could start to see the Rockies, the song that came to me was John Denvers Rocky Mountain High.
Didn't see any fire in the sky. Saw plenty of snow.

I definitely associate music with time(s) and place. The intro to Women In Love takes me back to the forests of Finland. Get It On by Kingdom Come is my mountain song. Reminds me of good times on the North Cascades Highway in Washington back in the late 80's. Some stuff, now, just piss me off because of the ex. Have a disc by EKO that makes me think of the Sierras in the early evening light... Yup, I get it.

You're in the right crowd here

Pretty much anything Pat Metheny has me in lake country mood

Rush's album "Roll the Bones" always has me remembering fondly a short but excellent portion of my childhood I spent living in Texas

If you like Pat Metheny, and being a bass man, you should check out Joni Mitchell's live album "Shadows and Light." She has Jaco on bass, and Pat Metheny on guitar, and those guys are both in their "A" game! The track "In France they kiss on Main Street" is my favorite. "Coyote" is also very cool!

Flirting with Disaster by Molly Hatchet always brings back fond memories of my former neighbor’s NFL Draft parties. For some reason the strippers always loved dancing to that song.

Coyote is unbelievable. I forget which festival it is in Japan that they filmed with Joni Mitchell and those two playing among others like Lyle Mays on the keys, but holy moly. That's just a different level of human being when it comes to musicality

It should be a staple in every American garage :D

That being said, "Here to Stay" and "Imaginary Day" are probably my top Pat Metheny albums followed very closely by "Still Life Talking" and "First Circle"

If time travel ever became possible, I'd probably go to that show. :)

I never really knew much about Joni Mitchell, except that she was a well known singer/songwriter. I actually came across this while watching a bunch of Jaco videos on YouTube one evening. Aside from the stuff she did with Jaco, she has a whole bunch of really amazing music.

She dated James Taylor, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Jackson Browne and Warren Beaty. Our House by CSN was written about her by Graham Nash when they were living together.
