Turkey hunting and BS welcome!

No luck today . Been raining a lot the last few days . It stopped about daybreak today . I was out there until 9 this morning, no gobbling at all
Saw a couple hens that was all . Supposed to rain around 11 am today and most of the rest of the week .

 

Slip hunt them sobs.

 

Friend of mine who is 10 years younger than me complained with being sore and tired after an 8 mile hunt last week. With all the storm damage it was a chore just to work a couple creek bottoms slipping up the creek bed from calling location to location. Plenty of blow downs to navigate by crawling through, ducking under logs or climbing over. I was tired myself. On the last bit walking out to the truck is where he complained so I told him wait till he got to my age. Said he hoped he could do as well then. Told him I had an idea to help with his hunting for next year. Go make him an obstacle course for the off season to train on. Cut down the biggest oak tree he has in his back yard and practice running back and forth through it.

 

It's been said "You can't move slow enough to walk up on a turkey" or deer for that matter.

 

My training to get ready for turkey season is all about the hill climbing it's nothing for me to gain 4500 feet of elevation at one spot i might hunt 3 spots in a day..obviously not all of them will have that kind of climb. I had the guys from misfire game calls here last week the hills were whopping those boys.

 

When I hunt the mountains here, and they aren’t 4500’ elevation changes, then hunt the piedmont area later. It’s like a walk in the park. You can wear blisters on the sides of your dang feet up there.

 

I’m 63 and still doing it 4 miles so far this morning.

 

Never heard a bird yesterday. Was in the same area the morning previous and had the safety off on 2 different gobblers . Just a few steps from my kill zone . Raining today and tomorrow.

 

Back at it tomorrow after 2 day break . Saw a long beard in the middle of the field in the pouring rain Saturday and saw 4 jakes in the same field this afternoon. Out my living room window . Have to drive less than a mile tomorrow and then walk about a mile in .

 

What a horrible season. The weather is terrible. Rain, overcast ,wind ,just plain crappy . Barometer below 30 . Been out probably 14 times had the safety off a few times but no shot . Toms are still henned up around here .

 

That sucks but keep your head up and keep grinding. Hard to kill a bird if your not out in the woods.

 

At least you are seeing and hearing birds. Just saying.

A friend turned me some more strikers. Several real goods ones in this batch.

 

Lynyrd can you hunt all day where you are or do you have to stop at mid day?

 

Turkey season went out Saturday at the house, wife just sent me this. He's 40 yards from the deck

 

Never heard a gobble this morning. Cold and windy . Not good for nesting turkeys either . Rain begins tomorrow for around 5 days . The whole season has really sucked .

Got same from a family member week after it closed here. It’s an annual running joke with us. She says they know the season dates better than us.

 

All the gobbling is across the road from where I hunt . Sounds like 3 of them
First gobble was 4:59
I’ve heard around 30 gobbles so far all around a mile from me . I’m on the same elevation just wrong side of the road .

 

Been real quiet at my place for the last couple weeks. Terrible cold, rain and windy weather.
This morning I had a lone hen out on my property and she just came out again.
Think there will be a high morality rate this year between the cold wet weather and predators.

 

It has been a good year here I have helped and called birds for a bunch of people . But this last week has been rough nothing making noise i have a week left to fill my final tag.
