Can't wait for Toyota to bring out the Performance Package for the Tacoma. Then I'll run Premium.

Absolutely true and I would agree 100% in most cases. Unfortunately I run a performance shop and make power for a living and at the end of the day achieving both durability and power takes alot of effort.

I see more detriment in running lower octane that doesn't outweighs the cost factor or benefits to running higher octane. Its like your health insurance tiers. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it...

    You've missed my point.

It's not about a single extra $-a-week figure.

It's about being discerning about how many different $-a-week things we accumulate.

Individually, they're immaterial. Add up enough of them and they can become significant.

So sure, buy the fancy gas if it makes ya feel better. Just assess that spend in the larger context and don't get yourself underwater by not paying attention to how all the seemingly innocuous expenses can add up when we don't pay attention to them.

    “Fancy gas”………sad that you’re serious……..

life is about choices (for serious stuff), NOT for what amounts to spending $1 more a day….(regular vs Premium)…….you can break even on the “expense”, by passing one Starbucks a week, or one fast food meal a week……

yeah, “fancy gas” makes me feel better……so does watching the truck respond better when I step on the accelerator, instead of knocking and hesitating………

LOL, lighten up, Francis. That was a joke.

    This thread is quite entertaining.

See, now you’re finally getting the point I’ve been making,

Rather than just wave your hands with a flippant “it’s just $1 a day, that’s nothing!” as so many do with myriad individually small expenses, you’re making a conscious, reasoned choice based on the value you feel you obtain for that expense. And that is what I’ve been trying to encourage.

If there's a role for youtubers without day jobs, here's an opportunity for clicks. Find a dozen to 20 or so 4g owners in your area, tell them you'll come physically pay for and fill up their tanks for x number of fill ups. They have to run it until the tank light comes on (we know there's still 2 gal or so left then). Then youtuber fills with either 87 or 91 in a randomized way and doesn't tell the owner which one. At the next fill up the owner has to say which octane they thought they were running on. See how actual gas correlates with owner's opinion. Someone with better stats knowledge could calculate how many trucks and how many fill ups would be needed to get a really narrow confidence interval, but it wouldn't be a ton. I'd watch that video. If perhaps there are delayed adjustments the ECU makes to new gas that take more than a tank to accommodate, maybe this would be less accurate. But if that's the case then those saying they get an instant butt advantage as soon as they put in a single tank of 91 would also be speaking placebo.

It's not the you tuber part they were getting at. It's the blind experiment control. Removing the ability to have a placebo effect when the driver knows what the variable is and if they have an internal bias (known or unknown) to associate a certain expected result.

I have no doubt I am biased. I certainly want the higher octane result to be terrific.

I’ve been using 87 ever since I got the truck a year ago but decided two tankfuls ago I was going to switch to premium. It could be my imagination but the engine seems slightly smoother/quieter now ‍♂️. I was averaging 19.4 mpg on 87. I’ll see if there’s much difference after a couple more tanks. I haven’t read everything in this thread yet either but if people are experiencing better results with premium I’ll probably stick with it. Certainly can’t hurt
