    Hello All,

So I noticed this torn wire the other day.

I'm not sure how long it's been like this, but there's been no issues with truck.

    How concerneded should I be?

I will go ahead and repair it soon, just want to know if there's any damage I should be on the lookout for.

    Thank you.

how the heck? My rodent damage is always noticeable. That looks like something fell on it or grabbed and pulled.
Looks like the vacuum switch, surprised it didn't throw a code. potentially no booster on brakes.

Wow. I'm glad it didn't cause anything catastrophic regarding your safety.

I'm sure you've checked all the wiring to make sure no other wiring or harnesses have been cut or damaged.

I hope it was not vandalism because that would criminal.

Like others said, that's rodent damage, seen several times on this forum. The other popular area is under the intake manifold. Remove the plastic engine cover and take a close look at the fuel injector- and knock sensor wires under the intake manifold. Look for evidence of a mouse nest.

If you go to a dealer for repair, they will typically quote whole harness replacement at a cost of $5000 or so.

I suspected rodent damage, but I hadn't seen any other signs.

Seems that is the likely source of the problem.

Thanks for the input, I will be setting traps.

I personally would call that a non-operable condition. I'd stop driving it and fix it asap. Repinning to a new connector would be ideal if there's enough slack in the harness. Soldering would be the only alternative I would trust. I would not splice with crimps.

That's a vacuum warning switch according to the parts catalog. The vacuum supply is mechanical, from the intake manifold and vacuum pump. The switch is there to drive a warning message in the gauge cluster if you have a vacuum leak. The logic appears to be set up such that an open circuit means OK. If the loose wires shorted, you might get a brake system warning message in the gauge cluster, and lose TRAC, VSC and pre-collision system functions i.e. like driving a 2nd gen! In either case, normal power brake assist is still present, because, again, mechanical.

Crimping new connector pins and weather seals would be the cleanest solution. @1Crusader should be able to undo some of the tape holding down the harness to get more slack. The switch is just inserted into the booster with hose barbs, so it can be rotated to shorten the wiring if needed.

It would have to physically pop out or be cracked to allow a vacuum leak. They call it a switch but its not responsible for making sure vacuum is present, it's a baro sensor. It tells the computer how much vacuum is present
The booster will have vacuum as long as that thing is plugging the hole. You'll still have brake assist

why name it a switch if its just a sensor? Dumb. But good info, thanks.

have you tried essential oil sprays. I get rodents too in the past, sprayed both wife and my car in the heavy hit areas and haven't had any since. could be coincidence or could be the cheapest fix either of my Tacoma's have ever needed.

Because it likely only has 2 positions.. vacuum or no vacuum.. the little vacuum diaphragm in it only recognizes "position A" or "position B".. on/off.. you get the idea

    That's some great info! @3JOH22A and @b_r_o

I was wondering why it never threw a code and why the truck was operating normally.

    You're info explains it.

Great advice from @SIK99Tacoma and @mattm55 and @Rock Lobster.

    Much appreciated.
