3.4l vs. 4.0l

hello im new to this forum and a new tacoma owner. its a 98 4x4 trd ext. cab with a 5 spd. currently a 3.4l. bought it for 600 bucks because it needs head gaskets so i figured itd be a good cheap project. question is i found a good low mileage 4.0l out of a 07 tacoma for a good price that runs good with only 57,000 miles on it and was wondering how hard it would be to put that in instead versus putting head gaskets in. will it bolt up and just be a computer swap or should i just fix the motor in it? thanks

 

Yep....save yourself the trouble and fix the 3.4.

 

I saw a first gen with a 4.0 swapped into it recently. It was a full long travel built up truck though. Lots of custom fabrication on the truck, so custom motor mounts was no big deal to them I guess. Definitely didn't look like a bolt in operation. On the plus side, you're in Texas so you might not have to smog it?

 

They also probably spent a ton of money, or have a fab shop and do this kind of stuff often.

 

no motor swap for Tacos is a simple swap. Id stick to the 3.4 as well. You would have to do TONS of work to make it fit right....granted it would be cool...i am tempted to put my 7mgte in mine haha

 

Dang, that rear axle is worth what you paid for that truck alone, nice score!

 

3.4 is a solid engine. Rebuild it, then if you want more power you can supercharge it. swapping in a 4.0 would be wayyyy too much work for what you'd get out of it.
