I sometimes purposely redline 1st gear while accelerating because the limiter bounce makes me giggle.

    Not at all true.

There's a reason it's called "bouncing off the limiter"

My brz does this just fine. I can hold first and bounce on/at the limiter for as long as my patience holds out. The truck is absolutely terrifying to hit redline with its 2 second fuel cut.

Counterpoint, how do you know the Tacoma isn't his beater vehicle?

Same reason we don't get a beater truck for the trails: If you are going to spend $15k to modify the vehicle for its intended purpose, it's better to start from a new, reliable, rust-free baseline.

The 2GR is happy to rev. Based on my experience, there are no problems with hammering it past the stock redline all day.

    Check build thread!
As the dude who took this pic, can indeed vouch for this

The weird cutoff at limiter can be removed by a tuner to allow you to bounce limiter till your hearts content. The only two uses I've found for this are snow wheeling and sand wheeling, fwiw.

Do Toyotas store rev info like some cars (I know Porsche does)? it would be nice to know when buying a used vehicle if it was “hammered past the stock redline all day”

I learned the hard way that attempting to save a few dollars by buying a good-used-car is not worth it at all.

The last 5 vehicles I've purchased have all been new. We ( the family ) take care of them and we drive them 10-12 years.

The wife's 2017 Forester is in showroom condition.
Daughter just bought a 2025 Crosstrek.
My 2021 SR5 is in beautiful condition too.
Our 2013 Corolla is still on the road.... when the time comes I'll help my son buy a new Crosstrek, or if things happen
to his benefit he'll be driving a mint-condition Tacoma LOL.... he is banking on my early demise.

Oh, we don't do burn-outs nor do we red-line our engines.
Cars seem to last a long time.... correlation ???

    It's correlation, but not causation.

There are plenty of anecdotes that go the other way. As an example, I own a BMW 135 that I bought new in 2008. That car currently has 155k miles on it and I can't tell you how many times I've redlined it on the street, track, or at autocross. On a similar note, I have a buddy with 230k miles on his Fiesta ST, and that car has seen everything mine has with an addition of SCCA Rally Cross just for spice.

There's the right way and the wrong way to thrash on a car. Do it right, and the cars are no worse for wear (outside of tires and bushings and the like). Do it wrong, and you can pop an engine with 5k miles on it.

You are corrrrrrrrrrrrrrrect.... however I would endeavor that the BMW 135 was built to be redlined and was probably
better off for it. These trucks are not built for this type of behavior - they are way heavier than that 135 and the engine
simply isn't designed to take that kind of beating.

I do concur that regardless of make or model or model year I can ( as can you ) destroy the longevity of that vehicle on
a 4 mile test drive with 10 miles on it.

But I'm a poor bloke who has to make things last a long time - so I tend to take care and make the most of what little I have.

If you really want to hit the limiter to hear the cool sound, When it hits the limiter, release your foot from the gas completely then quickly get back on it. All 3rd gens do the dead pedal thing, can’t tune it out or anything. Otherwise just learn some throttle control and keep it away from the limiter when drifting/burnouts. power wise there’s no need to ride the limiter

Op ignore everyone calling you immature or a child…God forbid someone has some fun! The Tacoma is tough and can handle some hooning, relax everyone

You'd think, but BMWs of that era are known to eat their rod bearings and cam ledges.

The 2GR was selected by lotus for the Evora and the Emira, it's plenty capable and durable when it comes to revving and hard duty. Just don't be a dunce and go past 2500rpm or half throttle when the engine is cold. But once it is warm, there's a good argument to be made that motors perform better with the occasional run through the entire rpm range. Italian tune-ups aren't just a meme.

But if you want a truck example, my family-owned 1999 Mercury Mountaineer with the cam-in-block 302 was redlined constantly and made it to 220k miles without issue before my nephew and a deer killed it.

I've bought two cars in the past 20 years. Please don't imply that I don't take care of what I drive or don't have an incentive to.

Like I said before, there's a smart way and a dumb way to enjoy the full capabilities of your cars. Redlining a car is not inherently stupid.

How did we ever avoid destroying the engine while doing burnouts in the 1980’s without a rev limiter?
