I decided to, change the oil myself for the firs time on my 2018 Tacoma TRD Sport. (all previous oil changes have been done at the Dealer) when I went to remove the drain plug on the oil filter canister, very little oil came out. I removed the oil filter and to my surprise the inside of the canister and filter had close to zero oil. the filter seemed damp not full of oil. I proceeded to drain the oil pan. Maybe 1 qt of oil came out. This puzzled me, I decided to pour new oil in to see if it would come out from the drain hole. I poured close to 5 quartz and no oil drained from the drain whole. has anybody else have this issue. any Ideas?

Did you drain your transmission by mistake? Wouldn't be the first time.

Yeah, I think you removed the wrong sump plug brother! If the oil sump plug was actually removed and you poured 5 quarts of oil into the engine, your garage floor would be a sea of oil!

If it was the transmission, about 3 quarts of fluid should have come out (and it would be tinted red). So if OP drained the tranny, most likely would be very apparent on both counts…

Definitely don't drive it. Post up a pic of what drain plug you took off and where you filled the oil.

Ok, after further inspection, it was the wrong plug. Thanks to everyone.

Hopefully you drained your front diff and not the trans!

If you drained the tranny and only one quart came out, that’s not good.

And as previously stated, not sure how you got 5 additional quarts of oil into your engine.

    Popcorn time

Even if you drained the wrong pan, I’m confused on why the oil filter housing was near empty.

Yeah, I had the same thought. At first I was thinking he had just removed the filter cartridge and had a rookie concern with the small amount of oil in it (which is always the case). But he said that the filter cartridge inside was pretty much bone dry versus soaked with oil as it should be.

I weep for this brother's truck!

Just guessing here but if OP removed the overfill plug on the transmission a quart of transmission fluid could come out since the AT wasn’t pumping fluid with the engine switched off.

    This is incorrect.
