It probably won’t go through if you’re shipping it to yourself. The best way seems to be order it to a dealer near you and pick it up. Any time I tried anything shipped it would either go through and cancel later or it wouldn’t go through at all.

The bad part is if you don’t have a good dealer near you discounting.

Is there a list of bell housings that will swap on the RC trans? I've been searching but nothing comes up. I'm looking for something that goes to the 2nd gen motors.

All I know of is the 3.5 bell housing that comes stock for the RC62F will work on both the 3.5 and 4.0. The RC series cannot be mated to a 2.7L unless you come up with something custom.

The 4.0L and Tacoma 3.5L have the same bell housing pattern so that’s why it works on those two.

Ok cool. They make a 4.0L adapter plate, so that will work.

Are you just trying to mate the RC60F up to a 4.0?

no I'm working on something special. Also I'm probably going to order the rc61f as it has a better 5-6 split.

    @BLtheP
Sounds like the RC60F should also work on the 2nd gens with the 4.0 L (1GR); swapping out the RA60F? Do you know if there is really anything different for this than for the 3rd gen swap you did?

Thanks! Awesome write up and thanks for being part of figuring this out along with others that pioneered this path. The RC60F really does seem to be the transmission the Tacoma always should have had. The ratios in the RA60F are especially ridiculous and the aluminum quill, are you f'in kidding me!

I don’t know all the details on the RA to RC swap, but since the 2024+ RC60F and RC62F swap in place of each other identically, there is no reason you couldn’t bolt in an RC60F the same way @BillDaCat8 did with the RC62F in his swap.

The snag will be that since the 2024 RC60F is setup for the turbo-4, it will not have everything you need for your engine, and since you don’t already have an RC62F in your truck, you will need to hunt down all those parts (the shifter piece, shift tower, bell housing, maybe wiring brackets, etc). It’s a cakewalk swap for 3G since we already have all the necessary stuff on our sister transmission model. For you, you’ll need to grab all that from Toyota, junkyard, eBay or similar, and then also get the new trans and mix and match it all to work.

Agreed, the aluminum non replaceable quill is complete crap. Overall I like the RC60F, although if I could mix and match ratios, I would choose the ODs from the RC62F personally. But oh well. I like it how it is too.

Ok, makes sense that it would be a bit more work, but still definitely worth it for the better ratios and getting rid of the aluminum quill. Thanks for the really quick reply!

I definitely agree that it’s worth doing and now that the 60 gear set is available, I do think it’s a better choice than the 62 gear set.

I also think that paired with a regear, some meaty tires, and the 4.0, the truck would be a damn beast. The 3.5 is still pretty weak sauce, even with 5.29 gears and this transmission, but it’s a whole lot better than it was stock. I think the 4.0 would be better for sure. I say go for it. Find yourself a shifter stick and shift tower from someone who used a B&M or Core (or go with one of the short throws yourself), find the bell housing, the shift lever housing piece, and the rest of it you can probably get by just fine.

Those are basically all the parts needed to mimic the stock 3rd gen setup, provided by @Jeff Lange

Wow! Thanks again!! This is fantastic information and you didn't have to go to the trouble of concisely summarizing it for me when you have already provided so much detailed information in this thread and your other one.

I'm running 4.88s and 35s, which puts me at slightly lower gearing than stock, so with the 4.0L it's definitely got some pick up to it, but is pretty rough on long highway hauls and I've literally said, "I wish I had a 7th gear". The double overdrive in the RC60F sounds like exactly what I want. I don't particularly need the super low 1st gear ratio but hey I won't complain about it either.

I saw you were running 5.29s with 32s! That must've been crazy low lol and does make it sound like the 3.5L is pretty gutless. The 4.0L is definitely great for the trails, I'm guessing the 3.5L probably does better on the highway.

Yeah, with 4.88 and 35’s, you won’t be too far off from the 4.30s and stock tires I am now running. Which works fine, I just wish 6th had a bit more go. The 4.0 is probably better about that, slightly. Overall it does work really well. I don’t think the “low” 1st gear will bother you at all. It’s no different than a stock 2024 Tacoma.

I did have 32’s and 5.29s for a while, and it was fantastic. 1st was quite short, but 2nd was finally reasonable to start in. And all of the other gears were wonderful. Reverse was nice and short too. 6th cruised at about 2700 rpm with that setup, which also worked well. Still 17-19 or so mpg most of the time. Now that I am on 4.30s, mpg is consistently better, and overall the gearing is pretty well balanced, I just still wish the top 3 gears were spaced out a bit more. I’d be totally happy if 4th was more like 1.10:1, 5th was like 0.90, and 6th was 0.70. The way it is, I’m automatically going to 4th for mild passes and 3rd for quick passes. 5th is not useful for passing, it’s only useful for a slightly slower cruise or a more zippy cruise when you may be in traffic and keep getting slowed down or something. Otherwise, it has absolutely nothing to really pass with, and so it really does feel like just another overdrive.

The 3.5 is good at high range, its Achilles heel is having nothing down low, so when you try to pass quickly in 4th, it bogs down and barely wants to speed up. It’s other issue is the fuel cut if you hit redline. It literally will stop fueling for like 2 seconds, so you really don’t want to gear it to where you’re going to hit redline in the middle of a pass. You want whatever gear you use to be able to make it through the pass without hitting redline, but also be low enough to be quick enough to make the pass in a timely and safely manner. Those are just weird 3.5 quirks, I have never had to be so strategic in any other vehicle I’ve ever owned. I think really it’s the computer trying to protect the engine conservatively, which could be a good thing but it really kills the experience sometimes.
