Factory installed receiver hitch is crooked

How does it look on a truck that's not leaning left? Your truck leans, then you put a long and flimsy lever perpendicular to it, it's going to really lean. While that may exxagerate a problem, it doesn't show what a problem actually is. Is your frame bent or in another way damaged? Is the hitch bent or in some other way damaged? Is the angle of the lean the same as the lean of the truck?

Grab a level and a tape measure. Then get a jack and level it out.

 

I used to sell and install those foolish Yakima bike racks and they never sit level. Always customer complaints. My bet is it's not the hitch, it's the rack, but I certainly could be wrong. I never liked those things, I tried to talk people out of them when they asked for them at my shop.

Mine looks similar but is due entirely to the rak attach not sitting level in the hitch. I emailed Walter for his opinion but it seems like unless I place a shim or something on the leaning side of the tube, the weight of the rak attach will always draw it down. The little 'anti sway' gizmo is no match for 50lbs of steel hanging off one side of the arm. Anyone have any thoughts on leveling this thing out?

 

Hang 50 pounds on the other side of it.

 

I've drilled and tapped a hole in the side of the receiver tube before. Then you just thread in a bolt to push the hitch to one side in the tube. You could even put a knob on this to use it without a wrench.

 

Interesting... I guess that would have a similar effect as one of those threaded pins that draws the insert up against a side of the receiver?

Toyota just told me the hitch is 'laser level' btw ...

I've done this on an old custom built/welded hitch n haul 25 yrs ago. Worked perfectly.

That first picture would drive me insane!

 

Driving around with a bike rack all the time would drive me nuts. If I'm not hauling bikes the rack is in the garage.

 

Unfortunately, I was never able to get the Rakattach to work with the Tacoma. Here are photos of the Yakima Holdup without RA in both my Subaru as well as the Tacoma. I drew lines to show the angle in relation to the bumper line on both. After taking the truck to a local Rack and Road and testing a Kuat from the floor, I am pretty sure now that the problem is not whether the receiver is level but rather that it appears to have a larger tolerance than my other receiver. So, unless you have a stinger with a quick adjustment to take up this slop, you will encounter this same problem.

 

Interesting. One would think that there would not be much variance in the standard 2" x 2" receiver opening. Out of pure curiosity, have you measured the actual receiver openings on both vehicles to see how much they vary?

Just measured my factory tow package receiver opening: exactly 2 1/16" x 2 1/16" square inside to inside.

 

Resurrecting this thread as I just got a 1up and put it on my 2019 and I'm having a similar issue. To my eye it looks like the 2" receiver tube that is welded into the rest of the hitch frame is rotated slightly. Will get pics in a bit. Anyone else notice that?

 

Would be interesting to park on a level surface. Measure your ground to fender measurements and then measure bike rack from side to side and compare. I had a Thule T2 Pro and had no such issue.

 

I have a 2022 and when I moved my 1UP rack from my F150 (where it was 100% straight) to my Tacoma, the rack is tilted down toward the driverside. I tried putting a shim in the receiver, to prop it an correct it, but it won't work with the 1up mechanism. Were you able to fix yours?

Well, maybe you could take the time to learn how forums like this work. It's much more efficient.

edit: BTW, the first response told the OP how to fix his problem.

 

Maybe you need a part time job being a full time admin for forums like these since you're obviously policing dead threads....God, go do something??
