You don’t just sue people because you’re upset. A lot of folks acting like this was a personal, directed attack with malicious intent (intent being key to a lot of crimes).

I got out of something similar to this when I was a kid and I was far from connected. Cops don’t have the resources to pursue something they know they will lose. Would you want them wasting your tax dollars and deprioritizing winnable efforts to prove an unnecessary point?

 

You're doing the right thing. This kid will likely do this again as he's not learning a lesson and the next time it may not be in his jurisdiction and he'll be held accountable for his actions. Hopefully someone will not get killed in the process.

 

They had a breathalyzer and they chose not to use it..

 

And there may be mitigating circumstances relating to why they chose not to and it’s up to their professional discretion. If there’s any way that person can claim they weren’t behind the wheel or other errs regarding probable cause, they know that’s going to be a waste of time. Burden of proof in criminal court is 99% in contrast to civil.

Additionally, depends on the judge in that locality. They may be lenient. Or the current imperatives of the department where their time is better spent otherwise.

The justice system isn’t meant to be perfect.

Maybe they just didn’t want to ruin the kid’s life. Is that what we really want here? Net contribution to society of them without a record vs them with one vs what the value of the damaged property is is definitely a component.

Don’t get me wrong, this sucks ass and the kid is surely in the wrong but let’s not act like everyone here is without fault and we should hang/draw/quarter them for what ultimately amounts to property damage.

The justice system is not perfect. One could argue it is designed to enforce existing class structures. White connected folks get "second chances" and minorities do not..

Law enforcement is part of that double standard whether they have good intentions or not

In case you haven’t read the whole thread, OP has said the 17 year old is from a wealthy family, and the way police handled certain aspects of the on scene investigation led him to believe the he was receiving special treatment. None of us know any different because we’re not involved, just repeating what the OP has said from his perspective.

 

They said his mom “might” be on city council (if 10k people in a town even constitutes a city) and his dad “might” be the mayor. That’s pure conjecture and doesn’t mean he’s at all “wealthy” or that it’s true.

Again, not trying to defend this little idiot but mob mentalities are not something to participate in or reinforce.

 

You said in post #146 that "the kid doesn't have connections". My point was that unless you know who the kid is, you're purely speculating, and I thought it was interesting that you were making a statement so definitively about the situation unless you have personal knowledge of it, which it doesn't appear that you do. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The OP doesn't need to "clear the air", he's merely told the story as it's unfolded without identifying the kid. He doesn't owe us anything. All he's done is share bits and pieces of info, unclear as they may be, as he's come across them. In post #74 he clarified that the kid is not the mayor's son, but that he believes his family is relatively wealthy because the father is a doctor. Whether or not the mother is actually on city council, or otherwise connected to LE, OP may not even care at this point, and again he doesn't owe it to anyone to clarify whether or not that's actually the case. It's TW, not testimony in a court of law. And he hasn't committed libel here, because he hasn't presented any of these "connections" circumstances as fact and hasn't shared names.

The OP did point out that the police, after coming to the accident scene, called the mother directly, which seemed odd to him, and would seem odd to me if I was in his shoes. The most I can say is that, based on OPs descriptions of the police actions, something seems abnormal, but whether or not special treatment was involved, impossible for ME to say. I'm just a guy reading an interesting story on a forum.

but she's def wealthier. kid gets into trouble at school all the time and gets away with it and nobody is sure why. as I said above, no longer my problem, I just want my truck replaced.

please delete the link to the profile with family photos. the mayor has nothing to do with this as is now clear.

 

White trash get the book thrown at them all the time too, I see it often. Very wealthy people get second chances regardless of their race.

I just want to be clear the mayor of my town has nothing to do with this stuff. when police didn't provide any information, a neighbor told me she thought that it was the mayor and her son - and that has since been corrected.
