Gotcha, that’s what I thought but wanted to confirm because a lot of people flip the two. I thought the stock 1st gear was mediocre, I definitely like the lower version provided by the transmission swap and/or regear. I don’t mind shifting a bit quicker due to it revving up faster at all.

I will say that if 2nd was a bit lower, then I would have absolutely zero complaints with this tranny. Well the reverse, but that was easily solved with the 2WD LOW mod which i use almost every time i tow, love it.

But thats super cool you installed a 4th gen tranny man. Never gonna happen for me :) Im leaving the truck as is and hopefully it lasts me for another 20-25 years. I only got 60k miles on it.

    Rolling up in neutral?

Roll up in gear, save fuel and wear and tear.

I know exactly what you mean regarding DFCO, i engage it all the time.

When im driving around town and timing the red lights, a lot of times i would be coasting a neutral when getting close to the light so that way I use less throttle. If that makes sense.

I use brakes very little when driving around in town, im very gentle on the throttle too.

Hello. How are you liking your new trany so far ? I was just about to regear to 5:29 before stumbling on this thread. I am seriously contimplating this swap and interested on your opinion on how this trany would perform on 33s and stock 4:30s YW AD tune ? Thanks

@iexc I love the new ratios, i dont even think about it because it just feels correct. BUT... im supercharged. 1st-3rd gears are lower(numerically higher) and feel great, but 5/6 are taller(numerically lower). with the supercharger i have no issues staying in 6th on the highway, but without it i would likely be dropping to 5th or even 4th alot to pass or going up a hill

    Reverse is a godsend

If you can install yourself, the cost is around or slightly cheaper than a regear and fixes a few issues at once. Im still on stock gears and dont plan to regear unless i go to 35s(skinny 33s currently) Without the supercharger i would likely want to regear as well

If i were to do over, id wait untill the clutch needs replaced and do the swap then to save labor. my TOB went at 50k miles so its only a matter of time...or trade it for a 4th gen

I understand 6th is ify but what i am after is 2nd gear performance or lower end gears. I got my first price @ $5700 cad before tax if they will sell it me. I may know a shop with Toyota account possible 40% off shop pricing

I have this transmission and initially ran it with 32’s and 5.29 gears. I really liked that setup. Then I installed Michelin Defenders in the stock 31” size. No real difference, tiny bit more pep and slightly better mpg. Then, in anticipation of selling the truck, I swapped the gears with a fellow manual guy who wanted 5.29s. So I’m back to 4.30s now, and with the stock sized Michelins.

Never ran the 4.30s + transmission with 32’s and definitely not 33’s, but I will say, I barely find 6th tolerable on 31’s. It’s okay on flat ground and barely okay going up any grade at all. I don’t think I would like 6th at all if I had 33’s. BUT, 5th is a good alternative. I can still get 18-20 mpg in 5th most of the time, so there is no real downside to cruising in 5th when needed. I do use 6th, more than I thought I would, but I probably wouldn’t if I had 33’s.

The down low gears definitely help get moving. Although long term with 33’s, I personally would 100% plan on a regear to pair with the transmission. They both complemented each other quite well.

Ok, after mulling over some of your data i believe i got it. If i run stock gear, looks like i am going to be close to where i started with stock if i run 31s. Some thing also tells me im not going to like the spraed between 4th and 5th. Might have a better chance accepting 5:30 with no trany swap then trany with no gears.?

lol. Sorry to hear of the trouble. Unfortunately for you, if mine does end up for sale, @daveeasa has dibs on it and I’m about 99.999% sure he will go through with it.

Any junkyarded manual 24’s up there?

@iexc Could you pick one up from a toyota dealer in the US?

I had to show ID when i picked mine up, but that was just to match the CC i used

Idk what legal challenges you would have crossing the border, but as long as you dont plan on selling it when you get back i think you are fine

    Not legal advice

if i could ,it would be my last resort. i just remembered i am waiting for documents so i can cross the border with no visa.I believe there would be an issue, from what i remember from people taking advantage of cross border deals is they do the installs south of the border. I would imagine best case scenario i would have to pay duty.

Any more issues with the leak? I'm curious to hear what you don't like about the truck? Specifically about the 3rd gen? What do you think will be better with the 4th gen?

Still planning on selling the transmission to @daveeasa?

I wiped the leak up and monitored randomly for a month or so after finding it and haven’t seen any traces since. I think it was some sort of freak thing. Maybe when I filled it some dribbled down and I didn’t realize. Not sure. I have not seen any leaks since, so I think my transmission is good to go.

I am not sure if I am still trading the truck or not. I had a noise that started up every time the AC compressor cycled on, and it really sounded like the compressor was going bad. It turned out that it was a rattling skid plate. The noise was even getting worse and all, making me think the compressor was getting worse by day. So, the biggest thing and final straw that led me want to get rid of the truck is now gone. As is the leak I thought I had. So now it’s kind of like what’s the point?

As for the 4G, I think the power delivery would be WAY better than I get out of the 3G. I still want one, but now that my recent ailments have subsided, I’m finding a lot less reason to act upon my desire for a 4G.

Dave is looking to buy his own transmission now, because of other needs necessitating him to have his engine pulled, so the timing makes sense for him to buy on his own. If I get rid of the truck still and he still doesn’t have a transmission, then maybe we’ll work something out. I also have a buddy near me who wanted it that I maybe could work something out with. He didn’t want it anymore once he heard about the leak, but now that that’s not a problem, he might be game to do the deal.

Or I might just keep the truck. Honestly who knows.

I think I have a few years before I need to act on my timing cover gasket leak. It’s a 2/10 right now. Monitor.

I also had noise from skid plates. With them off it’s much quieter. I may stay naked for a bit or maybe do another aluminum engine skid for general road protection and swap to full steel if I ever go exploring.

working on a 2 post lift for now.
