Hello. Got an 05 Tacoma with almost 200k miles. Been running rough for a while, poor idle, very jerky while running low rpm, falls on its face while trying to accelerate at highways speeds. Starts up just fine every time. Doesn't matter if it's hot or cold.

I do have multiple engine codes going on: P0011 camshaft position/timing bank1, p0016 crankshaft/camshaft coorilation bank1 and pending p0300 multiple misfire.

I did pop the cover off to inspect the tensioner. And snapped a pic. Im not sure how bad this tensioner looks. Not real sure what to compare it to. Does my timing chain/sprockets and tensioner need to be replaced or do you think I have an electrical thing going on? I'm leaning more towards mechanical failure.

damn - I had my timing cover off yesterday - I could have gotten a much better picture (mine below). The red flag to me is that black ring around your tensioner pin -- it probably sat there is now out of limit/spec -- so stretched chain? or maybe one of the other tensioners failed and this is trying to pickup the slack? But I'm 99% certain your tensioner pin is out ~1/8" further than mine when I put it back on yesterday. I'm sure some experts will chime in with better thoughts ...

but I'd research each of those codes.
    - 0011 could tie back to timing -- stretched chain -- possible vvt solenoid issue
    - 0016 timing out of sync -- possible vvt solenoid issue
    - 0300 engine misfiring - any other 030x codes that note specific cylinders?

I'd put money on the timing being off -- stretched chain or it skipped a tooth.

Yeah I did get a pending cylinder 1 and 5 misfire. I don't know anything about the vvt stuff. I suppose I could check to see if the engine is in time. I'm not sure how involved that is either. I would have thought if the timing was off a tooth the engine wouldn't run at all or run like absolute shit, but I don't know. Thanks for the response.

The tensioner doesn't look over-extended but the sludge present is concerning.

It's very possible you have a VVT solenoid that is sticking, I'd certainly investigate that before tearing into timing chains.

Update for everybody. Put both of the new vvt solenoids in and it runs like a champ now. Thanks for all the input.
While changing the right side the outside part broke off and the inside part was stuck in the motor. I had hell getting it out but a welder, pry bar and easy out made it a success. I was sweating it for a bit.

Nice, glad you got it going.
Not uncommon for the solenoids to get stuck especially in the rust belt.
