rotated tires changed oil threw out the old air freshener.
When he was shown how to start it, he jumped back and yelled "What is that sound?"

Per my post above I bought a bar and chain off of Amazon. I did not however use the chain as people mentioned that teeth broke off. Stihl chain.

    Small engine question......

We have an old Troy Built garden tiller. It gets used very seldom now that the gardens are well developed. Mulch seems to be the "no-till" solution.

Anyway, I got the tiller out from the garden shed today for a check over. The unit has set in the corner for over two full winters. It started on the third pull!

I'm in the habit of storing engine powered equipment with the fuel tanks FULL to limit condensation and rust.

I've heard some advocate to store empty due to the e10 content. (This machine certainly had e10 in it)

    Whats the answer?

Lots of different answers & a lot of it has to do with the type of carb on it.

Those fancy newer ones that have that little flappery thing? They don't seem to like to sit with fuel in them.

The old machines with fuel bowls? Junk fuel means gummed up & good fuel seems to be ok.

That's my results. But KODITTEN is the guy I would trust for a real answer.

You will never have carb problems if there is no fuel sitting the carb.

I'd run it dry or cut in a fuel shut off valve so it can be run dry without draining the tank.

2 year old gas really isn't that old.

So I got an interesting one, my personal mower. Kohler 7000 series 22HP twin. Basically a Courage which is the cheaper made one. Starting to notice it's slightly burning oil and can smell it when running. Started it up today and it puffed a good bit of blue smoke. I know the older ones are known for head gasket issues, but this thing only has 70 hours on it. I wouldn't think valve stem seals would be bad that early on. Any of you guys that are more familiar with this engine, you think the head gaskets already popped?

I will say a couple weeks ago I almost tipped the mower over at a pretty steep angle and during that I could smell the oil burning (but no smoke) and it has been doing it since.

Positive update to my mower snafu. Replaced all three belts Saturday. That primary deck belt was ready to come apart. Deck drive belt was in decent shape but had started to fray a little so I’m glad I went ahead with a replacement. The transaxle belt was a bit of a job! There’s no easy way (to me) to change it out. Just took my time and removed what I needed in order to get it done. It would probably be a little easier if I had it on a lift, rather than laying on the ground underneath it. But the good news is when I did a test run, there were no metal grinding sounds and all was running as it should.

    Dunno, maybe burned/overheated oil ring?

How long was it wrong side up?

There is a crankcase breather assembly that vents excessive fuel vapors back to the carb.

This breather assembly has a corse, scotch bright type of filter media before the tube that goes to the carb. It's there for the oil to collect/separate from the fuel vapors and drip back to the crank case. The fuel vapors get pulled into the throttle body to be burned.

If the machine was wrong side up for a while, that media could be oil soaked. It might take a while for the smoke to abate.

    Second question:?

How full was the oil level? If that oil level is at the top of the normal range, you may see some pretty sever smoke.

Some engines will smoke very bad if the oil level is at the top of the normal range and the engine is not in a perfectly horizontal position.

Man at 70 hours I would hope not. But, it was made in 2020 and we all know what a crap show that was...

It was never on its side completely, more of a 45° for less than 10 seconds before I figured out how to back down without killing myself.

Oil level was and is at the top full mark currently.

I think you might be onto something on the filter media for the crank vent. Completely slipped my mind.

Agreed. If you don't have cotton woods around you can't understand. It's really ironic the emerald ash borer came through here and wiped out all the ash trees instead of the cotton woods. The only tree that may be worse is the sweet gumball tree.
