Bendix called back and asked I pull the pads and take pictures of everything. I asked if they were going to do anything for me because Im not to here to help them for free. The guy said he needs to talk to his manager. Im already out rotors so, whats the sense. Im gonna R and D for free?

Well, I will eventually take them off, just to put them on blast, but they will have to get the info here.

Anyone know who the OEM supplier is/was for pads?

Akebono I believe is the OEM supplier for Toyota/Lexus pads. I've used Power Stop and have had good luck (~4 years/50k mi) so far. On my 1G Sequoia I ran Akebono pads and had good luck with them as well.

Edit: added link for Rockauto, the Power Stop pads I have now on my 2nd gen are the Z36's.

Thanks. Ill check if they have other pads besides ceramic. I cant stand ceramic and will never run them again. Ive rear ended people with 2 different cars because of ceramics. My Neon SRT4 and Tacoma Xrunner right after the pads were switched to ceramic. They have zero bite and in LA traffic its a liability for me.

Not happy about losing both those car because of it. Both situations were the same. The person in front of me slammed their brakes hard from not paying attention, I had just enough time to stop but the car would not stop, there was no cold bite. On the SRT4 I had just switched the pads days before to Akebono cermaics. Part of the Xrunnr's issue was the ABS too, the ABS literally turns the brakes off damn near completely, but a week before the pads were switched to ceramic, again zero cold bite. 2 different vehicles 2 different brand of brakes, both times I could of made the stop with good pads and ended up being at fault. Never again will I touch ceramics.

I knew when I bought the truck I was going to pretty much document everything with it.

Ive considering doing a youtube, even early on, I know how to make videos and have the equipment for it. I kinda just dont want to be on camera and if I ever did do it, I would have to do it in that way. I have considered it even more lately since people have been asking. Looking back at all the stuff Ive done, it would have been a hell of a lot of content. Actually a lot of content that I already missed out on making. I was thinking about starting it on the last Moab trip but I was feeling too off and just want to be mellow. Plus I dont know it would go, I like to say stuff thats on my mind and I dont hold back so I dont know if it would come out as not being professional or not. Still slightly considering it, its just a lot of work. All this stuff Im already doing alone, then just imaging I have to setup shots and edit would be crazy. Even sometimes worry about photos is too much. I also dont want to act like I know what Im doing. I know how to work on stuff mechanically, been doing it all my life, but honestly Im just winging it. I dont want it to be like Im some authority on Tacoma knowledge. It would have to be for entertainment purposes.

While from what I hear and the town part of Moab is def touristy, there was pretty on one on any of the trails (except fins and things and that whole area), like no one, every time Ive been there. Its odd. Dont get me wrong, I loved it being alone. I think as long as youre off roading and camping it should be mellow. Town and hotels might be a different story.

Yeah, most of the area I did the last time in Moab, I did see dead horse signs, but I did also do Deadmans Point. I was trying to knock out most of the trials for that whole region. I probably did at least 300 miles off road in that area on the last Moab trip.

 

Thanks for the follow up. Ill look into it. Im sure ceramics are fine for regular driving in a regular city. LA is too crazy. Its too the point to where if I drive some ones car I can tell if it has ceramics, because the cold braking has poor bite and when you're into the brakes you can feel them start to bite more as they warm up.

I wish I could read a part number on the pads that I took off my truck. They had decent cold bite, never faded and the rotors were as flat as a piece of glass when I took them off. I still have them so I might just clean them really well and see if I can get something off of them.

*edit* thanks again for the part number found this interesting thread talking about them searching that number. Will probably try and go factory if I can find them and they arent ceramic now.

Bendix called back. The only thing they said is that I could return the pads through Amazon. Im not gonna go out of my way to help them for a $24 return, my rotors are destroyed and I have to drive unsafe. The last pads I had on there, which if I had to guess were autozone pads (from the previous owner), were on my truck for over 100k miles. There isnt one mark on the rotors, and now they a completely ruined in 1k, Im talking insane groves across the entire rotor surface.

Ill post the damage here when I can get to it and to amazon. Unfortunately Im going to have to drive it messed up because I need to leave. As far as Im concerned Bendix is junk and is off my list, Ill never recommend them or spend money on anything they do again.

 

Was supposed to go to Europe and needed to get to LA to fly out, but I wasnt hearing from my connection in Europe so I decided to just stop in Moab for 2 nights to wait to hear.

Something unusual with the gas mileage is going on. Its off the charts. I did reset the trip correctly. This is the first full tank since the alternator was replaced and clutch replacement.

Even at half tank its unusually very high. Ive yet to break 200 at the half way mark. Its way over.


Remember Ive been chasing 300 miles before the light came on? Keep in mind, my bed is still loaded down and I still have the top box on. 340 before the light, wtf?


343 when the light came on fully. Still could of went another 30.


I dont see how a clutch would effect this. Even if the throwout bearing was bad, it shouldnt make a difference since its not engaged and the clutch is locked up.

Im thinking maybe its the Rav4 alternator might be much easier to turn? It was intended for a 2.0 4 cylinder. Less drag on the engine? Maybe the higher voltage output is giving the coils and plugs a hotter spark? We're not talking a little difference, this is massive. Think I might have stumbled onto something here. We will have to see on the next few tanks.

 

2nd tank. This was with more stop and go driving. The last tank was not a fluke tank.

Getting into Moab




Made it to the campground. My plans were to mostly chill, no crazy off roading or anything.

 

I decided to run Onion Creek trail again, its pretty mellow. I shot an unplanned last second video of me going through but I dont think Im going to post it. Was kind of practicing to see how it would come out if I did the youtube thing.



I then decided to run part of the 3D trail again and go take a look at how crazy the pickle is. Wasnt the most fun getting there since I decided to be lazy and not air down.




Ive watched some videos that were from couple years ago and the Pickle looks much worse now. Looks like everything is undercut from people hammering away at it.

On the way back I tried to short cut it so I wouldnt have to off road as much and of course it was a ridiculously long way out that I kept losing the trail and had to fight my way though.

 

The next day I went and grabbed the camp spot I had before

I really didnt do much but just chill and think about life. I couldn't get in touch with my friends in europe so those plans were off, but I decided to go to LA anyways to check on my stuff since Ive been gone since December.

Last time when I was in Moab before going to Boulder my aluminum tabs that hold the sway bar up kinda failed. The CAT bearing mount didnt hold and I lost all my hardware. So Ive been driving without a sway bar since. Not the most fun especially at free way speeds with the top box. But I always had it in mind and I drove accordingly. When I was in Boulder and I had an address I could get Amazon, I bought the right Energy bushings this time (27mm, not 26mm). Before heading to LA I decided to hook it back up. Also when I was at the junk in Colorado I grabbed the nuts since the kit doesnt come with any.


Missing hardware, you can see the stud fell out.


Back in business. I will eventually fix the tabs I made.
