I bought a $20 TRD shifter knob from Amazon. I'm not into knock offs, but wanted to make sure I liked it before buying a real $100 one.

Got it yesterday and put it on. I screwed it down till it wouldn't spin around, could have gone a lot tighter.

Went to take off later and it wouldn't shift out of park. Googled the problem, but didn't find anything where it was a problem for gen 3's.

Popped the boot thing off and loosened it a couple turns and it shifts fine.

WTF! ANyone else have this happen?

Theres a sensor in the shift knob that prevents non-oem knobs from shifting, it has to communicate with the ECU or something for shifts to happen.

You can buy replacements on Amazon and may even be able to transfer the sensor from the oem you removed, but I haven't tried myself.

There is no sensor in the shift knob.

Sad thing is...it's not a joke.

If I screw the shifter knob down, the shifter won't budge!

I vote coincidence. Wiggle the stock shifter knob around and troubleshoot. Sounds like a sticky interlock.

When I put it on, I didn't screw it down tight. Just enough for it not to spin around. Locked solid, backed it off a few turns and it's perfect.

    Fucking weird!
