Thanks. I got all the M18 gear. I’ll look into the ratchet by itself. Just wanted to share the deal

Picking up the M18 compact router today. Have an upcoming job where I need to replace some 100yr old (ish) covered porch boards. From the ends I can measure the thickness (1"). But they're only 4 3/8"wide and have the profile of modern deck boards, so I'll need to mill up some cedar or PT deck boards to match. I suggested cedar as a replacement as they'll be painted that standard porch grey color. Even after explaining the delay/wait for painting PT, they decided on that.

What does “mill up” mean in this context?

Because that sounds more like a planer job if you need to make it thinner. If you mean width, I would think that’s a table saw job. Even in a router table that not where it’s at for full thickness passes. It’s also a good way to be feathered with cedar as well.

It’s why I hate doing in place profiles or flush cuts inside. Takes 2 seconds to run the cut but 1 hour to clean. That’s beside the point I suppose.

Sorry for not being more specific. The thickness is fine. It matches cedar and drier PT decking boards. I simply need to rip to width (yes, with table saw) and add the slightly rounded profile (new router) to the ripped edge. There're all butted tightly. I've not seen boards on such an old porch like this.

Been eyeing that trim router for a couple of months. I love my DeWalt 611 but the cord drives me nuts sometimes, and my Triton 3 1/4HP beast has been relegated to the router table these days. If you use it, please post a review of how the balance is with the battery and which AH battery you end up running.

I've got one, its pretty well balanced. For small tasks I use a small format 2.0ah battery. When doing longer sessions like a round over on a piece of furniture I reach for the 4.0ah battery. I've not had experience with other cordless routers but I'm very happy with the overall quality of this unit. Its never felt overly top heavy by any means.

Well, my tech persona got the best of me. I used the excuse that I needed a smart charger to purchase an Opus BT-C3100 and perform the battery hack. It was obvious to me that this particular pack not only had 3 bars but it also didn't have the life of my other XC8.0 when fully charged. Out of sync cell was 3.49VDC. Now all cell arrays are ~4.07VDC. I'm anxious to see if charger brings it back to 4 bars after use takes it down to 1 bar.

If the cell was out of balance, usually it dies. It’s a known thing with Milwaukee.

I’ve had it happen with Dewalt flexvolt battery before too, but the difference is you can actually balance them if you put them on the charger.

Milwaukee on the other hand you really can’t unless you run the battery down enough for the charger to start charging.

Which is why I got the smart charger. It’s got a discharge function and if it happens again I will discharge all cells to equal balance then charge. If I can’t save it, oh well I tried. And now I have a neat smart charger.

    I understand that.
You shouldn’t need an other charger though.
    At least imo.

There’s already a ton of technology in these batteries, and Milwaukee is more than aware of this.

I've got lots of other types of rechargeable batteries. I certainly didn't buy the smart charger just as a dedicated Milwaukee alternative.
