Interesting - main reason I want a cot is comfort: it's gotta be better than an air mattress? Didn't think about the fact that a cot would be colder in winter. I'm not planning a winter trip (yet?) - but that's good to know.

Well with a cot in cold weather you should be running a pad underneath your sack.

Yeah, because you compress the down at the bottom of your sack so it doesn't insulate very well compared to a pad/compressed foam air mattress. All sleep arrangements are a matter of compromise, and the cot really just gets you above rocks, etc, but allows free movement of air underneath (so doesn't insulate as well).

(Camping) quilt peeps discard the bottom half of the bag entirely and just sleep on the air mattress straight up.

Oh. For those of y'all who are spending way too much time in the woods, <3 the ole bag liner. Especially two weeks into camping and your showers have been hit or miss, it's nice not to be too sticky (and nylon insides don't absorb sweat worth a darn)

There are dozens of super comfortable camp mattresses, more comfortable than cots. Do some research. None of them are air mattresses. I would never use an air mattress camping. They are prone to rips, tears, puncture and leaks. I currently use a patio lounge pad which is super comfortable.
Here’s an example of a good comfortable camp mattress.

... lol I'm not taking that backpacking either. I think we really need to define the type of camping then discuss the gear available.

    Remember, the original Q was

Anything 1-2p is going to be optimized for size and weight, typically only sitting height. 4-6+ domes is when they start being 'standing height' and this bringing in the Qs of full sized cots or whatever that 3" foam thing is...

I’m pretty sure he’s talking about car camping. You wouldn’t use a cot for anything you pack in like backpacking. I think he drives to a camp and sets up. But I agree he should clarify exact what he’s doing.

I used one of these sleeping in the bed of the truck- Hands down the best sleep I’ve ever had camping. But for BP’ing, I’ll be on this for the foreseeable future:

Yeah but I don't see using a 1-2p tent car camping, when there's so many roomier options available. 1-2p are sitting height, not standing, and like I said, low cot (if you want to cot at all) is the solution.

I rock the REI airrail, but yeah, packable air pad of some sort will get the rocks off your back enough. That said, my 'tenting' gets a bunch of different options depending on what I'm doing.

backpacking - 2p tent (agnes blacktail hotel bikepack) + air mattress (rei airrail) + light mummy bag (rei zephyr 25)
(short) hike in multiday (aka scout camp) 2p tent + air mattress + low cot + temp appropriate bag (mummy in cold wx, flannel teton 35 bag in warm)
carside solo camp - (kamp-rite) tentcot + temp appropriate bag (and pad if cold), deploy awning if needed. That... or just sleep in the truck bed.
car site camping with wife - Coleman 4p with awning, queen sized air mattress, double 0f teton bag, mr buddy, beer fridge ... etc etc etc.

2Toyotas, looks like you have a shell on your truck. Why don’t you just sleep in the back of your truck?

Would you sleep in the truck if you had a Springbar tent? :)
I can cot and stand in the Springbar.
Options are the word for the day.
The truck is small, crampted, limited. The truck sleeping is for quick nights.
I actually have a taller 30-36 Wedge DCU cap on order.

Oh, two people. Even alone I prefer the Springbar.
Also, most use is on road trips.

Tent and screen room up and checked out. Screen Room is awesome, no floor, usually set it over a picnic table . We use an air mattress :fingerscrossed:

Do you have the stormfly cover? I want to get one for my kodiak canvas. Was hoping they had a military/veterans discount.
