I've tried to do a search on this subject here on the Forum to no avail. My question is this:
Can I add side avoidance mirrors to my Gen 3, 2017 Tacoma SR5? It seems even the basic 2017 Toyota vehicles had 'em but for whatever reason the SR5 did not.

Any thoughts on obtaining and installing an aftermarket kit? Seems my Google search came up with RAV 4 side avoidance mirrors that might be used on an SR5? I believe the 2017 Tacoma Sport and TRD had em?

I don’t have an answer for you but I do know the name of the feature you are looking to add. Blind Spot Monitoring system or BSM.
The sensors are located on either side of the rear bumper and can be quite expensive by themselves. Your best bet for those will be sourcing used BSM sensors, either in the buy/sell/trade forum here or a pick and pull scrap yard. Wiring them up, mounting them at the correct angle and calibrating them is a completely different matter though..
All of that is assuming you want the OEM system, but there are aftermarket solutions too I believe.
There’s a post somewhere here about someone adding BSM to their SR5. If I can find the link I will edit it into this comment
    Here is one retro fit
This post has some links for aftermarket, and suggestions to just use mirrors
And it looks like this fella got it working as well

Lesson from my motorcycle safety class, which saved my skin several times:

    Mirrors say NO
    But they never say GO

My daughter has this feature on her 2025 Crosstrek.
I advised her don't believe it - glance over your shoulder.

I've been glancing for 50 years and it hasn't hurt me to do it.

Anything is possible if you have the money and time but is it worth it? I have BSM on my Tacoma but I always look over my shoulder so it’s an option I could do without.

Popular mod has been to replace the mirror glass with some from the rav4. (I forget what years) some have even kept the factory heated mirror function. The rav4 glass has a nice split blind spot angle

I would do this, if OP wanted an OE solution, it would probably be quicker and maybe cheaper to trade this model in for one that has it. I am leery on an aftermarket solution,,, thinks back to years past when half the older vehicles on the street had aftermarket backup cameras dangling by the wires, clearly inoperable.
