Your SSD booting nicely is great and all (it really is), except he's getting better performance from a computer that is well over 5 years old (P4 2.8/256MB DDR/80GB HD) while you've got a sweet luxury - let's compare Apples to Apples shall we (pardon the pun).

Glad to hear about switching to Ubuntu - I would say welcome to the darkside, but Microsoft handily takes the true darkside award, meanwhile Apple is 'soooo almighty' so Ubuntu's more like the "breath of fresh air" side.

Word to the wise: You can learn a LOT about Linux (re: terminal, how it works, etc) by lurking around the internet looking for things. However, be forewarned that should you ask a newbie question [to a bunch of linux nerds], expect a lot of BS. Searching is truly a wonderful friend.

@OP: My favorite story with linux involved my laptop, an Inspiron. After installing 7.04 (Feisty Fawn), my laptop did well with everything EXCEPT... my wireless card. I spent many hours over many days tweaking the driver and modifying every possible setting, etc namely using NDISWRAPPER to make the card work. After such grueling work, I finally got the darn thing working. Too bad it was another headache to get it to authenticate with the Open network with VPN :(. Then a matter of DAYS later, 7.10 was released!!!! Why'd that piss me off and make me happy simultaneously? My network card worked perfectly with all networks right after install! I was irked

with my laptop i am dual booting windows 7 and linux pinguy(very similar to unbuntu 10 ) and i love them both for different things. linux can be challenging to do simple things like work on online hw because of all the plugins crashing and such, but linux is sooo useful as a tool with just about anything offline. I would really recommend checking it out

My Foray with linux/ubuntu started about 2 years ago. I still have a 9 year old desktop running as a htpc ( very similar specced to the one you posted above). I didn't say it wasn't quicker for older systems. All I'm saying is that it can be overwhelming if you aren't computer savvy. And you are 100% correct, if you think flaming is bad on this forum, never post a linux question. I do believe they damn near invented flaming.

You hit the nail on the head, however I have a different sort of suffering: I have a lot of knowledge in Windows and PC hardware, but near zero in *nix. I try asking how to fix a simple issue and I don't receive any replies, which has given me the mindset that *nix either works fully on your computer or has a few major issues that can't be resolved... unless you've somehow managed to leap that hurdle from ignorance to "i've invented my own version of unix".

I recently tried Ubuntu for the 3rd time to see if there was something I was missing out on. Installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a P4 3.6 with a Abit IC7-Max 3 board, and couldn't get the audio working. It's a basic AC'97 Realtek ALC650 chipset, it works under windows with generic prepackaged drivers and you mean to tell me Ubuntu can't figure out how to make it work? Forums were a complete waste of research, and directly asking the question of how to fix the issue went unanswered.
That computer has moved back into the closet until I decide to punish myself again.

Ive used linux off and on for a couple years now. I too, have had major problems with connecting to any network (ndiswrapper = shoot me in the foot) and with linux recognizing other hardware drivers. But I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 and have been quite satisfied with it. Problem is linux doesn't have a decent video editor or email client (havent tried thunderbird yet, my be the ticket) or this and that. So im stuck having to dual boot. I guess i could run windows in virtual box or vm ware?
