Looking to install a power tailgate lock on my 2023 Limited.
I have across many videos with either the OEM unit or the Pop and Lock, more of these then the OEM.

Has anyone here installed either one or another maybe?

I installed the non OEM version. Works flawless. There's tons of videos on how to do it. Couple bolts and running some wire.

I opted to run it to my passenger door instead of my driver door (I didn't want it unlocking any time I unlocked just the driver door)

Figure out if you want it to open on the first unlock (driver door) or 2nd unlock (all doors) and find a video for how to do it that way.

Any video will show you how to get it set up and working, its just a matter of if you run the cables up the driver or passenger side, and what wires you connect to.

I went with OEM, but both will do the job.

I installed both the OEM version and an aftermarket. Although both work, if I did it again I woulg go with OEM.

Completed install today of OEM that I picked up on Black Friday.

Followed video and Toyota instructions below:

Tips: wear gloves when working around heat shields as metal is sharp.
Space is tight in the area where metal ties go. I started them where there was more hand space and then slid them to final location where I finished tightening.
Note the locations of the clips on the cowl trim. Comes off easy if you know where to pull.
Pull straight up on the scuff plate. I used a wide trim tool but you can do without.
The grommet can be finicky if you don’t push it down square. If it didn’t seat correctly, remove and try again. Don’t fight it if it went in crooked.
I did disconnect the battery per instructions just to be safe. Everything worked fine afterwards.

looking to get one of these too…didn’t know that was even an option. So there is the same connector down near the kick panel on both sides? I’d rather mine on the second unlock as well.

So to have it open with one push it will get hooked to the drivers side, multi push to the passenger side?
I never thought of that, I will have to figure out what works for me.

My OEM kit is on the passenger side. One press of the FOB unlocks driver door, second press unlocks the other doors and the tailgate. Installed per the instructions supplied by Toyota in the pdf.

Hmmmm…I’m curious ….On the pop and lock one …it’s specific to the drivers side (by the wiring & connector setup) or is it possible to plug it in to the passenger side plugs aswell ….like the oem factory one style one? Now I wonder if anyone has done this?

Yes. There's several cables, all you have to do is connect the right ones on the passenger side. I forget exactly which ones I connected to which, but I found it out online. (You can make the tailgate lock and unlock from the window switch if you wanted to )

I watched the Tacoma California Asian lady on YouTube. (I'm not sure who, but she's popular) She ran into her driver side. So I had to rip everything out and run it up the passenger side after I realized it was a silly solution to have my tailgate unlock anytime I step into the vehicle. Just needed to figure out exactly which ones to tap into. Green into purple rings a bell. You can find the information online though.

Both options are doable, just make sure you know going in what option you want. Not every video you find is going to walk you through how to install it the way you want it installed.

Also, pro-tip. Shove all the extra cable the kit comes with inside the tail gate, instead of under the floor. I figured that out after I already had everything buttoned up and it wasn't worth the hassle to fix. The extra cable has to go somewhere. Just loop it and zip tie it inside the tailgate instead of having a giant crows nest under the carpet.

Yes. It is. That's what I have. It took me a few minutes to figure out which to connect to what, but essentially all you're doing is just telling the device hey, when I get this input, unlock. When I get the other input lock. You're just tapping that into the passenger lock. There's extra cables with connectors on the ends. You're just connecting different colors together. Brown into purple rings a bell, but it was over a year ago. I found the information online

This is link to the instructions for the 2019+ instructions for the install. These instructions worked fine for my 2017 Limited. These instructions tell you to use the passenger side. I know on mine there was no extra wire to coil up. The harness was exactly the right length, as if it had been installed at the factory. I don't see how that harness could be used on the driver side, because the driver side would require a longer harness IMO, since the harness enters the tailgate at the passenger side bottom.

I have the OEM version for 1.5 years. Works flawlessly.

Leave like an hour or 2 to install depending on how fast you work. It’s a pretty straightforward install, just not a super quick one. I spent most of my time routing (the head/plug of the cable barely fits between the frame and the cab) and installing zip ties on the underside of the truck because the cable is just long, requiring a lot of zip ties.
