I thought of that first, but it seems really high for that use.

 

I believe it is part of an in the wall soap/glass/toothbrush holder. Some were stationary, others like the one below were "hide-away" style.

I was thinking a small gas or electric heater of yesteryear. It given the size I think rusty green is right.

 

Wrapped things up today for my part on this bathroom renovation. Prior projects resulted in hacked joists (one section just cut out of one) and missing original subfloor.

Sistered up joists, added blocking and used structural screws everywhere. There was no framing under/near the toilet, I added what I could given the space allowed. Was able to tuck the subfloor under the flange per the guidance from the plumber. I'm assuming it'll be repalced as it's all rusty. Patched the original subfloor all up and got the new 3/4" plywood subfloor installed. Even left two small pieces loose so the plumber can do the shower supply & drain. Used construction adhesive. It's feels really solid now. And added a partition wall where the new tub unit will be going. Didn't go to the ceiling as it's a small bathroom and they wanted any extra light from the window. I'll trim out the top with some nice period trim.

Old houses....good times. But I enjoy the challenges.

Plumber and tile guy on deck for Monday. Tile covering lower wall where the old fake beadboard was.

 

We have one in the master bath we are remodeling!

 

Had new 6" gutters and leaf filters installed yesterday. At the same time found out 1 of the underground drain pipes was clogged with crap. Blew it out with the water hose, all is good now.

 

Part whatever of taking out all the random shrubbery around here.

Disclaimer: This is totally the wrong method and wrong equipment, I am well aware.

Not enough traction and not proper strapping. It's all I had. Two outta three today isn't bad.



Cleaned up, added some really crappy bagged top soil, grass seed, a coat of peat moss, and watered in. Maybe by next year you won't notice.

 

This is exactly the right method and the correct equipment. More than once I've gotten "hey, I've got this..."

"Yeah, I'll swing by later"

 

Last 2 hours removing a huge solid salt bridge from the brine tank of my water softer. Now down to the last 10-12" of salt which is mostly loose and moist. Part of me wants to just refill with fresh solar salt 1/2 way, regenerate and be done with it. However, the interweb advises pour hot water in and disolve/remove it all. Taking a break now...but leaning towards the latter.

 

Nice job. Not nearly the "Hold my beer" method.

 

Is your brine tank separate, or an all in one unit? If it's separate I recommend (from experience) taking the whole thing outside and give it a good scrub, followed with some fresh salt and 5 gallons of water.

I've been using mostly salt pellets in my softener. Any time I've used the solar salt (or crystals) I wound up having some nasty funk happening and I'd have to take it outside and clean it on my old one. I will no longer going to use the crystals/solar. I know on my new softener it has a tray to prevent the salt bridging, but I'm going to stick to pellets. They also make a 50# salt block that would work.

 

I just wanted to head off all the "experts" saying "you gotta use this yadda yadda you're an idiot"

at least you were using mostly non-metal straps. the terrifying version is with long old rusty chains of questionable integrity.

i like using those 24" carbide pruning blades for tree/bush removal. cut at the roots with them, give it a tug(just above idle), if it doesn't move, cut some more. oh, and a CORDED sawzall. last time i tried using a cordless, i burned through all my batteries on the first bush, with 3 more to go...

 

Yea that's why I wasn't even mad when it broke. I was like "well better than slinging back at the truck".

I've got a "beater" chainsaw I usually do my trimming with. I'll probably do something similar to what you describe on the last one in the Fall when I attempt it again.
