Payload sticker wrong?

Hello,
I purchased a 2024 4 wheel drive long bed sport with premium package.
The Tacoma website and documentation state approx. 1600 payload capacity. The sticker on the door however says not to exceed 1270 (with a payload reduction sticker of 3 pounds). Why the discrepancy and what is trusted source of truth? It can't be the premium package can it?

Interesting, thanks. I will check it out. I can't believe the extra JBL speaker and heated seats reduced capacity by 300 pounds... Maybe it's the recall.

 

Interesting, my 2024 Pro sticker states a 1,200 lb limit with a 21 lb reducing sticker. The manual states 1,200 payload. I could not find anything on the recall sites about it for my VIN, but the specks state 1,680 lbs.

 

The sticker is the truth. All manufacturers advertise the max payload(*) which is never actually attainable in anything other than a base model stripped down truck.

 

This "recall" affects many years of Toyota and Lexus vehicles.
My truck is a 2012 and had that sticker. I pulled it off. I've seen stickers with "0" as the change.

 

The number on the website and literature is the highest possible payload. The GVWR of 6780 is the same on all trucks. They actually weigh the truck after it is assembled and subtract that number from 6780.

A BASE trucks curb weight is 5100 lbs. Subtract that from 6780 and you get a payload of 1680. But you didn't buy a base truck. When you start adding options to the truck, they get heavier. If you're payload number is 1200 then your truck actually weighed 5550 lbs when it was assembled. You have 450 lbs of extra equipment on your truck compared to a base model. The 4X4 components add weight and a long bed is heavier than a short bed. FWIW, you're doing pretty good. I've seen some Tacoma's with 900 lbs of payload.

Low real world payload numbers are a negative with Tacoma. Around 1200 lbs is pretty typical for a 4X4 crew cab Tacoma. But Ford Ranger and Honda Ridgeline will be typically a bit over 1500 lbs. That's real world payload, not paper specs.

This isn't just a Toyota thing. All truck manufacturers do this. Some 1/2 ton trucks will have nearly 3000 lbs of payload according to the stats. But in the real world most fall between 1600-1800 lbs. Very few get to 2000 lbs and the ones that actually come close to 3000 are unicorns.

 

900 lbs of payload on a truck is comical considering I have an old Honda sedan that has an 850lb capacity.

 

Maybe some lawyering in there or something. My '17 OR door sticker claims 1000lb. Yet it handled ~1450lb of LVP flooring a couple weeks ago without touching a bump stop.

4th gen is a bit higher than 3rd.

 

Payload for an OR 6MT on Toyota’s site is 1525 lbs. Sticker inside my door says 1200 lbs. Only options my truck has is heated seats and mud flaps.

 

Same here on my OR 6MT. Is there some explanation that isn't malfeasance on Toyota's part? There is no way the heated seats added 325 pounds.

payload stickers are gray areas. I have been loading my 23SR up with 1ton regularly and it only has 900lbs max payload on the sticker.

 

They're not grey at all. You just overload the truck and ignore them. There's nothing grey about that at all. Just own it.

The sticker is for your truck. The brochure number is for an imaginary truck.

Payload is always less than advertised.
