I dug into my dash today to try and do the steering column weld mod That everyone does for the steering play. Upon opening the steering column cover, I noticed that my steering column is a different column from everyone else’s in the YouTube videos that I’m finding online. I’m assuming that its just the 95 to 97 column is different… If anybody has any pictures or anything, that would help me figure out how to access my steering to do this mod please let me know. I can’t find anything on the forum that’s up-to-date. Thanks!

maybe a updated fsm link for a 95.5?

Post a photo. Having just done this on two 03 trucks I’m curious what you’re dealing with…

Early trucks and maybe the non tilt column can be a little different.
I talk a bit about it at the end of post #42 of this TTORA thread. Post #42

so I understand the concept of getting a polar in there and pulling it off. But I just I’m curious if anybody’s actually successfully done this mod on this steering column.

I haven’t come across one person that’s done this process. This is the second go at it, and I am failing to even understand how I would come about getting this off with a puller with such minimal space.

It's less Tacoma and more mod
Having had three 95-97 trucks myself I also haven't noticed the looseness that the later trucks get, every time one of mine has had odd road feel or excessive play it has been from tie rods or the rag joint.
