Greetings TW, i was out running some trails in norcal and decided to try to pull a dead tree out of the way but it was a bit larger than I anticipated. I had the truck in 4lo trying a slow pull to get the tree to budge with kinetic rope and strap combo with the tree behind me. I tried again and my dumbass had my hand resting on the shifter so my hand knocked it out of D into N then back into D while it was rolling back. As a result the truck dumped into D and made a clunk sound and jolted to a stop.

I couldn’t imagine how much more torque my transmission had to handle especially with it being in the Low gear range and rolling backwards.

for now the truck drives fine and shifts fine but im wondering if any lasting damage has been done to the drive line? Any insight/stuff to watch out for is appreciated

I think you dodged the bullet - lesson learned: don't use the shift handle as a hand rest.

you should come up with a better story when you take it to the dealer for warranty issues on the transfer case.

I'd give you a possible ''maybe.'' Maybe it's fine and maybe it's not. A LOT would depend on the soil under the tires and how soft it was and if was able to more easily slip some when you dumped the trans.

And this comes from a guy that once blew a FJ40 transfer case shell into multiple pieces.

Dry loose dirt/logging trail. I mean it felt like i got rear ended. The truck would spin all 4 when the slack took up in the rope. Although i wasint hammering down on it at all im usually the type to go pretty slow when doing this type of stuff

At least your bell housing didn't explode with the force of 20 Hiroshima bombs.

    More than likely you're fine.
In 4-LO, the torque is amplified by the low gear, and therefore the hard jolt. Unless something's now banging, clanging, grinding, binding, etc., etc., you're fine.

Good news is that these 3rd gen autos seem to be fairly stout. Just programmed horribly. Haven't had too many issues reported over the years regarding complete failures. I dunno, maybe a drain and fill or a trans flush with pan removed for peace of mind?
