Cracked Micro SD Card from Integrated Dash Cam

Has anyone ever been as stupid and me and cracked their Micro SD card while pulling it out of the integrated dash cam for the first time ever?

My computer won't recognize the card now. Looking to magically recover all the data on it, so that I can send a video of the guy who ran the red light and tore off the front bumper/grill of my month-old TRD OR to my insurance...

 

Ahh, bummer. You could try sending it to a data recovery business if it’s worth that expense

 

Does the Micro SD card work if you put it back in the dash cam? If so, you might be able to connect the dash cam to your computer with a USB cable to grab the video.

Second thing to try is use a different Micro SD card reader to see if that makes the card happy.

Third option would be to send the damaged card to DiveSavers which I have heard is expensive to recover the data.

Unfortunately I don’t have my truck right now. The cops wouldn’t let me drive it, and using the dash cam app to download videos has been a complete pain so I, being the genius that I am, decided I would just pull the SD card out before the tow truck hooked everything up and then figure it out later. But thanks, I think it’s still definitely worth a shot to at least try popping it back in the camera when I get a chance to go to the shop.

And yes, I reached out to a place in my city that said they would at least physically look at the card to do a free diagnostic before attempting their $1,350 recovery service on it… I don’t think that is going to be necessary considering there’s a police report (that I’m still waiting for to be filed) that lists the other guy at fault for running the red light. But I’m still pretty mad at myself for having the dash cam for this exact type of scenario then stupidly making it useless. Posted this looking for a miracle but didn’t have high hopes. Appreciate the suggestions though!

 

Oof. Yeah, that’s what I figured but this picture drives it home. Oh well. Maybe I can find a dash cam that uses a less fragile storage method.

Anybody know if they make VHS dash cams?

 

Found one but might need to be ceiling mounted versus a dash-mount. Good luck with insurance. Glad you're physically ok from the accident.

 

Hmm maybe I can have the shop rig something up to attach it to my new grill!

And thanks, and yes insurance is going to be annoying ordeal but it’s just a truck and it could have been a lot worse.

Oh man that sucks. I put the FitCamX integrated dash cam in mine. It uses a MicroSD card too, which I'm sure they all do now. They can be fiddly to work with, but removing them seems a lot easier than reinserting it. I hope I never need to use it! Downloading from their app isn't the fastest but it does work.

 

About one year ago I wanted to copy some files from a USB drive, however, the computer wouldn't recognize the drive. Using the Command Prompt with administrator privileges I was able to recover the drive and its contents.

Try opening the Command Prompt with administrator privileges and then type "list disk" and then "select disk (A, B, C, D etc.". If you're able to select the disk, trying accessing the disk from Windows.

 

I am more interested in seeing your cracked card.....trying to figure out how you did it so I do not do it on mine.

 

Can't you go through the process as if you didn't have a dash cam? That's what people with out a cam are going to do. Chances are the other driver has no insurance valid registration and so forth. Maybe your insurance will take your word for it, they should any way they sre your advocate. The people I saw weaving in and out of traffic today don't care if you got them on camera.

I know that does not solve your issue or get you access to your footage, but if the cam didn't record for what ever reason. You'd be SOL any way.

 

That's the problem, that process sucks. It's unfortunate OP has to go through that now.

My daughter t-boned a couple kids that ran a red light. No dash cams. Their word against hers. Police report was inconclusive as to who was at fault. (no injuries fortunately)

@raydototaco it'd be worth checking with local government/DOT to see if they have any cameras observing the location and whether you could get the relevant footage.

 

Thanks for the suggestion! This was something I hadn't tried. Unfortunately, it didn't work. (Only the C: drive listed) But I'm glad to have tried another alternative

 

Hard to get a good picture since it’s so small but I gave it a shot. I basically pulled straight down with the tip of my index finger on the piece that holds the Micro SD card, then kept pulling down when it was flat. Once it was flat, I’ve gleaned that I should have pulled outward.

Not super intuitive imo, but I wasn’t really thinking straight at the time either. My unsolicited advice (for what little it’s worth) would be to go gently practice doing it when you haven’t been in a wreck so that it’s easier to do when it counts.

 

Yes, it's definitely not the end of the world that I don't have the footage and I can still go through the process without it. The cop I spoke to said he was listing the other driver as at fault on the police report, that he was issued a citation for running the red light, and there were witnesses that said they have video footage supporting it too.

But right now, the police report still hasn't been released by the approving supervisor yet. So in the meantime, was just hoping to see if there might be some potential solution I wasn't aware of. Definitely doesn't seem to be the case, but worth a shot to ask!

I also wish I had the footage just to show everybody who keeps asking me what happened. Just bummed that my expensive dash cam in my expensive new truck is only worth as much as the SD card inside and the dummy operating it... but really appreciate everyone's help

 

Yep, not looking forward to the whole process but glad to be alive to go through it! I'll see what the police report says whenever they finally make it available to me. Supposedly they have up to ten days to file it...

I'm hoping they identify the witnesses in the police report so that I can reach out to them myself separately, because I didn't talk to anyone except the cops (in my infinite wisdom) after the wreck. Wasn't really thinking straight. But yeah, seeing if I can find some government camera footage is a great idea. Thanks!

 

You could try using diskpart → list disk → select disk, but based on your pictures in post 16, you might need professional help to recover the drive. Good luck.

 

Also check state & county court records for driving infractions.
