Higher trim Tacos have a hood liner. My '25 TRD OR Premium has this and I think it makes a difference. Does your truck have the hood liner?

Me too. A YT video I saw said that and I agree. Kind of neat.

I unwatched this thread for a bit due to the severe negativity. There is some great content on here though.... I'm back.

All three I drove were without hood liners. One Sport and two SR5. I bought an SR5. The Sport was the noisiest. Sounded really bad. One SR5 was fairly noisy and the one I bought sounds like a non turbo 4 banger.

Interesting. Tires maybe???? or is this motor noise your referring too? I believe these trucks sound different at different times.... depending on the engine cycle.

I'm only one week in with my new truck. The new truck is a different truck all together IMO. Its about the same size as my previous 3rd gen. The seat and drivetrain sold me on this truck. Drive one if think you may be interested and have the budget to upgrade. I really like the 4th gen and believe that the more I drive and become comfortable with it, the more I will like it. I like most things better than my previous 3rd gen.

Absolutely not tires. The 2WD Sport had a loud rattly gravelly engine sound. I was surprised at how unpleasant it sounded. I remember thinking I'd have to drop the $400 for the hood insulator if I bought it. But the ride was so incredibly choppy that I opted out of the Sport. Since I didn't want a 4WD I had to settle for the SR5. The first one I drove was also rough sounding but not as bad as the Sport and better ride quality. I then traveled 150 miles to a good dealership and drove the stock number I was interested in. Nice ride which has gotten smoother and the engine was and is normal sounding.

Why do you think some sound better than others if it is not due to better insulation?

I've test driven both, back to back.

I noticed the hybrid had instant power for accelerating and the non-hybrid had a little bit of turbo lag. Though even that small lag was WAY better than my 2017's downshift/rev-'til-the-motor-screams behavior. For the ~6% upcharge on a TRD OR Premium to get the hybrid, that's the way I plan to go when I buy a 4th gen.

I recommend driving both to see what you think.

Did the quiet one have the JBL system and/or did the loud ones not have it?

I'm mildly curious about the noise cancelling feature, and what models get it (or don't). Kind of a clever way to hide the racket.

My 6MT doesn't have it (nor the hood liner), maximizing the various clatters the motor makes.

The noisiest one had the JBL system. The other one plus mine are base. I hope the SR5 doesn't have the noise cancelling or piped in noise. Just another stupid system to have to pay for. I did notice a horrible wind buffet on the ears when more than one window is open and even with one window partially open I got complaints on phone calls about excessive noise on their end. So I have to close all the windows when making a phone call.

I’ll tell you, having had several Toyota trucks. Starting with an 88’ sr5, then a 97 Tacoma a 2000, 2006, 2012, 2017, and a 2020. I’ve had all gens. With 4 cyl and 6 cyl engines. All were 4 wheel drive. This new 4th gen is WAY more powerful than any other model. I test drove both hybrid and non. I went with the hybrid because it was even more stout on take off and acceleration!

It’s by far, in my opinion, the BEST Tacoma so far!

I see that you have the big screen and it's a manual. I don't think we get that in Canada, Toyota only offers the premium package on the automatics but not the manuals. I really hope they come out with the premium package for the manual next year so I can get one.

The blindspot monitor is behind that, and can't sense through metal. Some bumpers try to move it, and one guy tried to move it to the brake lights to allow any bumper to work.

In the us, you can get the big screen n a base non JBL TRD. I think it’s an $800ish option.

Yes I agree. It has an unrefined sound quality but I don’t care that much about exhaust sound. It’s not pleasant so I’ll just deaden it if I can

You didn’t ask me but I’ll answer since I’ve owned two third gens.

No, not a single thing. The engine and transmission is lightyears ahead of the 3rd gen. I paid 36k for my 2016 TRD loaded vs 44k for this “base” TRD… so if anything, I miss the lower price

Although not a Tacoma I am a fan of the same hybrid engine which is in my Land Cruiser. The instant torque is nice.
