This may be a stupid question, but can anyone see a problem with painting some U-bolts before installing them? I am going to do a light coat of self-etching primer and then 2 light coats of matte black paint.

My concern would be the paint gunking up the threads too much. Would this cause any issues getting the correct torque out of them? I could always mask the threads before painting, but the point of doing this was to make the whole U-bolt black before installing. I guess I could always leave the threads bare and then paint them after they are installed on the truck. Just figured it would be much easier to do it before hand.

Purely for aesthetics of course...my truck has the "blackout" look going...currently they are a very shiny silver and stand out quite a bit.

Pretty early for a Friday thread.. but just tape the threads off and you'll be fine, or get them cerakoted and that will go on thin enough not to disturb the threads.

If you don't have one already, doing a flip kit will make the truck look a lot better than just painting the u bolts.

Hahaha....yea I was worried about the Friday thread comments!

Already have the flip....swapping out the leafs and figured it would be the time to paint the new u-bolts black if I was going to do it.

Haha it can't hurt if you do a nice job on the paintwork. Pretty sure I've seen it done on here a few times, buy can't site any examples. I'd probably use chassis paint, that stuff is pretty durable. And I'd just do them up to the threads or at least close to where the top plates will sit if you can guess about how much free thread length there will be once installed.

As an option, you can just buy black u-bolts. Rough Country makes some that are black powdercoat/cerakote which should last longer than paint.

I taped the threads off and applied 2 coats of rattle can. It has held up well despite off-roading.

Archive u-bolt flip ftw. The unpainted bolts don't bother me at all, but I'm extremely happy with their bump stops and I love that their kit uses 9/16" bolts.
