What's that sensor near the oil filter

    Second hand truck.
    I was changing my oil and noticed a switch near the oil filter.
    It was totally rusted (Ohio) and the wire had rusted off.
    I'd like to replace it, but I don't know what it is. I thought it
    might be the oil pressure sender, but the diagrams that I have
    seen show the oil pressure sender on the front of the block, not
    on the side near the oil filter.

    2000 Tacoma, 3400 engine.

    It is the oil pressure switch I venture your oil pressure light never comes on! If the wire is broken

    I have my oil pressure gauge in there .

    I will try and remember to take one for you.

    Being I still have the leftover mindset pictures require sending or taken someplace to be developed then printed I just never got in the habit of taking pictures.

    Not real sure just what a picture will show but a fitting ( mechanical gauge ) with a 1/8" copper tube inside a rubber vacuum line for protection towards the front of the engine from the oil filter.

    As you can see fitting and copper line in front of oil filter

    Metric Adapter to pipe thread allowing the use of a compression fitting

    That is the location for the oil pressure switch that turns the light on and off when your002.jpg oil pressure has dropped to the to late now area.

    I could see looking at some manuals one could get the idea that switch is on the front of the engine

    From the diagrams I have seen.

    That's pretty neat that you ran a line with a mechanical gauge to get an actual PSI reading. Oil pressure loss is a rare event, but do you have any in-cab notification for it? I've had two pressure-loss events in my truck's lifetime: a cracked block and a lost oil pan plug (5 miles down the road after using an oil change service). The first instance obviously led to an engine replacement, but the second I was able to pull over in time and shut'er'down before damage occurred.

    Depends what your back ground is oil pressure loss is very critical more so on 500 horsepower engines $$$$$ seconds can mean the difference between a engine and a boat anchor .006.jpg

    What does the oil pressure run for the 3.4? I’m looking at replacing the idiot light with real live information.

    Hot idle has been anywhere from 8-20 depending on the heat of the day. Regular running around town without high RPM is 30-55psi depending on factors. Cold start and higher RPM events on a less hot day are upwards of 75. Cold starts can be over 100 for a period but it always calms down.

    I used a sensor from low dollar motorsports. They're good quality sensors and they come with the calibration data for Haltech ECUs. And you can display the engine oil pressure data on your CAN gauge or any other Haltech compatible dash. Just remember to buy a connector for the sensor plug from them too, it's like $8 or something. I think I linked the sensor in the Haltech thread.

    It won't be plug n play just a heads up, the stock harness doesn't have wiring to the ECU for oil pressure. You'll have to run a 5v reference, an input wire from an AVI, and a sensor ground down to that location. The stock oil pressure sensor is a one wire unit and only runs back to the gauge cluster. But yeah the Haltech sensor is a good one too, but they're all wired the same whether they're from Haltech, Low Dollar, Holley...etc

    Ok, Yes, got it, I’m going to have new camshaft and crankshaft harness made directly to the haltech and the oil harness to at the same time. I think mine are just old and brittle and after replacing the heads pulling the harness up at a 90 degree angle to replace the heads the trigger issues are not stop and are completely random now from one day to another, one day runs fine another day can’t get over 4800rpms, 800k of miles probably has something to do with that.:)
