Has anyone had theirs fail more than once and had the second repair covered under warranty? Mine was done in the spring of 2021 with ~60k miles and covered under my certified pre owned warranty. I’m pretty sure it’s leaking again and I’m at 99.2k miles. I imagine if I go over 100k I’m SOL.

Park it or drive it right to the dealer, they gave you the warranty and you’re within….their problem. And don’t accept their “just a weep or it’s just wet” so they can get you past 100 and then tell you to GFY or pay up.

That’s the plan, just sucks it reoccurred after they “fixed” it the first time. Having an engine come out twice in the first 100k miles really doesn’t sit right with me. I’ve got too much into my truck to cut my loses, but if this was a regular family vehicle I’d probably have them fix it then trade it right in.

It’s not a high oil pressure are , it’s just an oil splash area . So technically it really shouldn’t get any worse . Unless oil is dripping on the floor, just ignore it . Clean the area every oil change and you will be fine . If it really bothers you remove the pS pump clean really well and put a bead of Sealant there and let it dry overnight . If done right it won’t leak any more .

It is all in re assembly, besides putting enough RTV everywhere it is a 3 piece cover that have thru bolts thru the first one.
RTV on the second one then tighten. Once all the covers are on and torqued, done. Can't waste time to where the first layer of RTV starts to set up. At dealers can't go on lunch break or finish the next day before completing the whole process. Actually at dealers, forget to put RTV on one of the parts! IMO

Toyota diagnosed my leak today. Wants $5k for the repair. They repaired it three years and 25k miles ago, covered under the CPO warranty. I thought I was still covered since I'm under 100k and seven years from when I bought the truck, but the CPO warranty ends at seven years from when the vehicle was first in service and not when I purchased it. Shame on me for not fully understanding that. I knew it was leaking two years ago and brought it back to them, and they told me it wasn't, and I was seeing fluid film. I had a lot going on at that time in my life, and it was a slow leak, so I didn't fight with them at the time, and now I'm kicking myself. The dealer told me their work is only warranted for 12 months, which is a joke to only stand behind a job of this significance for that short of a time.

If this was any normal vehicle I would take it right around the front of the building and trade it in. There is zero chance I'm going to shell out $5k to only have the leak reoccur again in two years for a third time. @Bishop84 I'm sorry to bother you with this since I know it isn't your side of the house, but do you have any suggestions on how to press the dealer to work with me on this? I'm always calm and polite and definitely not difficult to deal with, but I am incredibly frustrated with this.

During Covid there was a lot of issues with sealant, we had to use 3rd party crap in 2022 and I had a few comebacks all from sealant failure.

the problem is the time, 2 years is as far as warranty will cover, regardless of issue the shop can’t expect the tech to work for free.

also let’s say it isn’t sealant how do we know if they are doing it right in the first place?

Generally I’ll replace the timing cover if the re seal leaks but this is a crappy situation, I have no real advice except to press the manager

Thank you. I plan to politely press him tomorrow. I would pay out of pocket for the job if they were willing to warranty that specific job against future failures for a reasonable amount of time / miles. But to pay $5k to have it fail in another 25k miles seems too risky. An engine from a totaled wreck seems to be about $5k with another $3k in labor. So 5k on a risky repair of an engine over 100k miles or a low milage engine for 8k seems like what I would do if the leak progressed to a point that it becomes a problem.

One other question that you’d probably know best. Does this leak ever progress to something catastrophic? As it stands now it’s pretty inconsequential; it doesn’t even impact the oil level after 5k miles between oil changes. Assuming I lived with it am I risking major regrets ?

That is not correct and they are screwing you if they told you that…

    IMG_1850.jpg

This is right from the official CPO warranty
supplement….if you are within 7 years from the date of purchase as a CPO vehicle, AND, your clock says less than 100k miles, you are absolutely within the CPO powertrain warranty, which by the way, the guide specifically mentions the timing cover as a covered item.

Shit you had me excited. I ran up to the filing cabinet to check my papers. Looks like the gold warranty is seven years from purchase date, but the certified pre owned warranty is seven years from original date of service. It’s funny how when Toyota did the job last time they billed $2100, but now that it’s out of pocket it’s $5,000.

Is it leaking to a point of dripping on the floor or just build up ?

My skid plate is catching it. It’s dripped enough that the front axle is sufficiently wet with oil.

Then that’s a leak . What you could do is pull the ps pump away from the area. Not a hard job , take of the belt from the pulley . Clean and degrease the area really well. Let it fully dry , and apply sealant to the seam area . Also while your in there check the plate with the four bolts in the front that could be leaking and that’s a 20 min fix . It done with care lots of people have been good to go
Bit I do go along with Bishop , who ever fixed it didn’t do a good job or the material they used was junk

I'm thinking that's what I'll end up doing. The dealership was "gracious" enough to lower the price to $4k from $5k, but still is only willing to give a 12 month warranty. I'd consider paying something if they would stand behind the job for a decent amount of time, but no deal without a warranty.

If you do this have them check the coolant crossover pipe on the back of the engine for leakage.
