What Have You Done To Your 3rd Gen Today?

This reply is not taco related: but the mk3 supra only uses 1 of this style hanger and the exhaust was still too floppy with all new bosal donut hangers + the one 38 year old rubber hanger of this style still installed which made the tightly clearanced 3" exhaust like to bang into the chassis in the rear. I first replaced with a Kartboy 1.4" urethane hanger because I hate rubber. That was great for a bit until I changed the 38 year old motor and trans mounts with Energy Suspension pieces. With the new poly motor mounts installed, the motor was raised a hair and the exhaust wanted to contact the chassis again. I now needed a specific length hanger back there to keep it off the chassis but not so low that it was droopy. These GrimmSpeed's were perfect at 1.5" (3mm longer). It was something like $27 shipped for 1, but 4 for $40 so I figured the taco could get the rest.

I agree with everything, but that the alternator output mods are only needed, in order to reach 100% charge. There is much conversation about this, but in the small airplane world, where the battery capacity is often critical as a redundancy to safely get back to the ground, there is some solid evidence that charging batteries to 100% causes stress on the battery, such that the useful life is extended, by avoiding full charge, as well as the long accepted knowledge that discharging any lead battery lower than half capacity shortens it useful life. unless you use your battery for deep-cycle activities, to run things with engine off, you will never notice that the battery is not quite fully charged. As for cold weather starts, an AGM is so immune to cold temperatures, that even with a partial charge, it still has more USEFUL charge than any fully charged flooded cell battery at the same temperature. I have a 12 year old battery on my plow truck (electric over hydraulic) and it is still going strong and the charging system has not been modified. This thing is amazing and might be in part that I have not modified the alternator. This battery has had a charger on it maybe 3x in its life, due to alternator failure or leaving lights on. There are clearly pros and cons to every decision, just helping to make an informed one.

What is that exhaust, and what is that U-bend connected to off the muffler? is it connected to something?

Re AGM: So, to clarify… your opinion/experience is that the useful life of the AGM is extended by avoiding 100% charge and avoiding more than 50% discharge? So then, OK to use an AGM as your starter battery without modifying the charge voltage?

Not the best, but it's in the 90s today so I worked quick. Only covered about half of the area that was left unfinished by our builders (which is fine, the other half is part of where the pool will be so it's getting tore up anyways).

Now I am very curious and I am going to have to hit the road to see how many rpms I am at in 4th doing 85 mph, have forgotten a few times that I was in S4 mode... lol The tune does not change the gear ratios, only shift points, remapping the throttle and maybe even redline (which you are not at) curve more or less, and I thought I was close to redline at 85 in 4th, so trying to figure out the math in how 131 mph was hit in 4th gear unless I am misunderstanding something??...

Mine is stock suspension and tires (245's) and only RWD with chin strap still in use, but mine is very stable at 95 mph cruising...

Yes, I am convinced by a few engineers in a small aircraft forum, who did lab testing on many things, including batteries, that the useful life of any lead acid battery (AGM or Flooded cell) is extended by either or both: never quite charging to 100%, or discharging below 50% of the battery full capacity. The part about never discharging below 50% is very well supported in the Off-grid Solar Battery bank circles. The not fully charging is less supported, but was the result of some testing as stated (sorry the details are fuzzy), and to me makes sense; any battery charges more slowly as it approaches full charge, even though it seems to still experience similar heat; This can be considered additional stress, and stress nearing the limits, is never as healthy as avoiding stress near limits. I was convinced, and now is supported by a battery that is 12 years old, abused by both: mostly sitting all summer, and by large amp draw of the electric plow. The battery has only been fully charged maybe 4x in its life (because of not having changed the alternator settings), and still started the truck, sitting outdoors at about -20f this past winter.

Though additionally, I have ruined several ATV/Snowmobile AGM batteries, by trickle charging them for 6-7 months, with an electronic AGM battery charger. I found that these batteries last longer sitting on a shelf, without the charger; though I would probably charge them for an hour or two every 6-8 months, if they were to sit longer than that. I also tend to charge them for an hour or so, just before installing back into the machine, just for peace of mind.

Also, since I tend to make long winded posts; Note that the very reason that batteries have reduced output available in cold, is because the cold slows/inhibits the chemical reaction that is necessary to produce the electricity. This may be a problem when you need that electric in extreme cold, BUT it is the ideal way to store a battery, instead of on a shelf. Heat does the opposite, and definitely shortens the life of the battery. Store your off-season batteries., fully charged, and in a freezer, and that is likely even better than any charger. Or for us normal people, just be sure to store your batteries in a nice cool place, not in an attic or direct sunlight. On the garage floor is probably much better than on a high shelf. And now I may have touched on another misconception you may have heard; Storing a battery on the concrete garage floor will kill its charge. This is a miss perception, the cool heat sink of the concrete floor is actually healthy for a battery, keeping it cool like in a refrigerator. But the myth is generated by the fact that a cool battery has a slower chemical reaction; so warm it up before testing, or your result may propel the myth.

BTW, in my youth, I would regularly run the battery down, with music cranked in a parking lot, and just push start the car as needed. Not good for the battery, but in that case, knowing what I know now, I might consider it Necessary to fully charge my AGM. It would depend on priorities.

I only emphasize the advantage of NOT altering your truck charging system for an AGM, because I believe the vast majority of people reading this, could install an AGM without ever fully changing the battery; and never notice that the battery is not fully charged; At least till after reading this; and thinking back; Hey, Just how old IS that battery now?

 

I'm not sure about the math behind the ratios and the tires, but it definitely took a little while to get to 131.

'21 Taco TRD OR 4x4 with 265/70/16 and KDMaxx 9.0 tune with the governor removed. Stock ratios with whatever came stock.

I’ve been wanting to learn PLC programming and maybe come up with a way to put different batteries on different charge cycles. (NiCad vs lithium vs lead acid). Also looking at adding solar/aux batteries on the Taco. So again, thanks for the details.

Yeah I have no doubt you hit 131, these trucks are capable of higher speeds, I was just thinking my rpms were closer to redline at 85 mph in 4th gear... There is not enough difference in tire size to make much difference... I'm just gonna have to take her out and pay closer attention to speed vs rpms... lol

 

Had a Magnuson installed the other day. Apparently either, the fan clutch was bad, or the shop didnt seat it properly, fan cut a small pin hole in a coolant line, pissed all the coolant out and overheated. Hopefully the engine is in okay shape, only overheated once.

Other than that, the supercharger worked great, loved it.. so now its at the shop for who knows how long, and so i couldnt be out of a truck, so i got a platinum tundra today dont worry, the taco is still my pride and joy
