2 other accidents in the vehicles history, could have had shady work or crappy parts installed…
I’m unsure what could cause it to barely go off, but counterfeit parts have done odd things in the past

He should actually get a check for the repairs on the first loss, and a check for the Actual Cash Value of his vehicle at the time it was totaled by the shop's incompetence. From the first check, the shop would be owed compensation for the work they'd already performed, and the balance should go to OP.

If it wasnt his fault but he's going through his insurance....
He will have to pay his deductible but will be made whole once his insurance company gets reimbursed by the other guys insurance.
Ive helped family & friends with this lots of times...

If he filed with the other guys insurance if they were at fault, you dont pay a deductible..

It's pretty rare for something this drastic. Shops damage cars regularly, but things like a small scratch or breaking a moulding or window while removing it, that kind of thing.

His insurance company and the shop's insurance company aren't going to want to handle as I outlined because it's a lot more work and a lot more hassle for them. The quick and easy way is to have the shop's insurance just handle this as a total loss like any other vehicle vs. trying to determine the value of his vehicle at the time the loss actually occurred, and having his insurance pay him for the accident damage. But it was 2 totally separate losses. He's owed for both.

Someone in the insurance business can chime in here... but I am sure you cannot collect twice. The owner, (in this case) is owed for the value of his car (undamaged).
The owner cannot collect twice. The insurance companies will hash it out.

Owner, I imagine wants a fast resolution. He can get this from his insurance...

I am in the insurance business. This is 2 completely separate losses. He's not "collecting twice." He's also not owed for the damages from the accident and the value of his truck if it were undamaged and in one piece at the time of the fire. He's owed for the accident damages and the value of his truck at the time the fire occurred.
