Very smart of you. I used to do that when I got pay increases. I would have whatever the increase was and have it transferred right into savings.

 

I did the same to get out of debt(assuming emergency fund is in place).... once dept free, then savings.

 

Good idea too. It's really easy to stash away income that you are not used to having, like pay raises or continuing car payments after they are paid off, but it's really difficult to try and put that money away once you get used to having it. A wise man once told me to put the maximum allowed into my retirement account when I was in my mid 20s. I followed his advise and now I can retire 10 years early because I followed that advise. I know a lot of folks my age that will have to work the rest of their lives because they never put anything away and Social Security does not cover the monthly bills. Ahhh, the musings of an old man! LOL

Haha, A wise man once told me to do the same thing... and I didn't listen LOL. So your smarter than I am. Now I'm 53 and way behind on retirement. But I'm debt free, make good money and have gotten very aggressive with my retirement to play catch up. Big congrats to you Kent on being able to retire 10 years early.
