I didn't pick a particularly exciting career field...and yet over the course of my 27 years (26 active duty...into my 2nd year civil service) I've seen things, met people, and done stuff few civilians even have a clue about. You'll see...

Pick something you are truly interested in...the rest will work it's way out.

Just being prior military gives you a slight edge when you return to the civilian sector. You learn a certain discipline and carry yourself differently...hard to put a label on it...but most can see the difference...especially those that have been there.

When I retired from Active Duty I attended a Transition Assistance Program (TAP)...guy from FEDEX told a story about 100 applicants for something like 40 part time positions they were looking to fill. They had to solicit more applicants because only 25 out of 100 passed the drug test! Sad but true commentary on our society today.

Sorry for the ramble...best of luck to you! Very interested to see what career field you chose.

SERE is cool, you learn all kinds of cool survival stuff, but when you are done w/ training your just an instructor. which is fine, but if you are looking into something where you are not just "teaching" and you actually get to implement the skills you learned then go TACP. all TACP's go to basic SERE school as part of initial training so you'll still get to learn some cool stuff anyways

plus you have a much better chance of going to cool guys schools as a TACP (ranger, air assault, airborne, combat dive, HALO)

If you are color blind you won't be able to do anything aircrew associated, hate to burst your bubble so find out if you are before it is too late and get disqualified from a job you had "RESERVED". Been in for 6 yrs and just signed the dotted line for 5 more years, I LOVE THE OPPORTUNITIES THE AF HAS PROVIDED ME, not to mention my very nice Reenlistment Bonus ;-)

Congratulations on wanting to become an airman. I look forward to hearing more from you after basic, tech school, and your first duty assignment.

Best of luck and thanks in advance for serving our country.

Here's a lesson you might as well learn now....keep bugging him. Tactfully and respectfully, but call him regularly for an update. You've heard the expression "squeaky wheel gets the grease?" If he tells you to stop calling, ask him when is the soonest you can call for an update...and then call at that exact date/time.

Most importantly...hold out for the job you want...don't settle for something less because it's taking too long for the other.

    ;)

keep in mind that the military has already met their recruiting quota for the year, especially the Air Force and Navy, which makes it tougher to get in. so many people are joining right now due to our fucked economy that unless you score really high on the practice ASVAB, they're not gonna go outta their way to get you in.
