Okay, dunno if this was my first date (if you can call it that), but I remember it distinctly.
It's also the best story.


Gritto's First Crush


So I was 15, staying for a few weeks at my maternal grandparent's beach house in Perdido Beach Alabama.
There's a barrier island more than a mile away across the Sound, so no big waves there.
The Sound is (mostly) not very deep, as I found out when Grandpap took me out one night in his fishing boat.
He had a powerful light and a long gigging spear... for flatfish, flounder, whatever.

Earlier that Summer, I had been 2 weeks at Camp Tuckahoe (Boy Sprouts)
It was then that I earned the Mile Swim patch.

Anyway, the second day at Perdido I swam across the Sound and back.
My Mom made me tow a float along behind me.

When I got back there was a gal standing on Pap's dock.
She said: "Sharks out there, 'Cuda too".

I think she was looking for some kind of reaction
I shrugged, not being able to think of anything to say.

So then she said: "Know how to water ski?"
Me: "No, 'fraid not"
Her: "I'll teach you"
Me: "Okay"

Turns out her Dad was a big shot lawyer in Mobile and they had the beach house next door.
And a speedboat

I forget her name now, and I never asked her age.
Old enough for definite boobage though
She had dark hair, a tan, and sparkling white teeth.
She taught me how to water ski, and then how to drop a ski and slalom.

Sometimes we'd hang out at the next house over.
There was another young gal there, blonde and very athletic.
A tomboy if ever there was... don't remember her name either.
Pretty sure she was older than me.
Her parents had left her there alone for a couple weeks, which she didn't mind one little bit (different times).
She had the Woodstock double album that she played all the time.

She also had a boat, not a speedboat more like a dory, but with a pretty powerful outboard.
First time she took me out in it, she gunned the engine and the bow raised way up
After maybe 5-10 seconds the bow slammed back down with a splash.
She did that deliberately.

One evening we're listening to the Woodstock album and she says: "Don't move"
She gets up and walks over, plucking a scorpion off the couch right next to me.
Then she stomped it under her flip flop.


Best few weeks of my life
