Those videos where dad's reveal a shaven face to their kids is hilarious - it stresses them the hell out to "hear" their dad the way they recognize him, but looking totally different

I totally wish I knew how to code

I understand the extreme basics of what would be needed, but wouldn't know all the code for how to execute said commands

Much less have access to the software to modify it since its under lock and key

I wish my CNC table's software had a pierce counter, which would be easy to implement since it just needs to count how many times M03 is detected in the G code as it's running

Does the software output any kinda logs, even to a internal console or anything like that?

Wouldn't be hard to wire up some automation to hook the native controls and get the content and then count whatever occurrence of a string value is in there... I could almost write the ChatGPT prompt for you

The software itself is under strict lock and key, considering it is specifically written to their own proprietary controller.

However, you're always welcome to come over and add whatever doohickey or whatchumacallit to my thingamajig for counting each pierce!

I never considered an "external" counter so you could be onto something.

because how am I supposed to text and drive and shift at the same time

272k on the 4runner's OG manual trans. I expect the engine will give out long before the transmission does

Technically since it's controlling a CNC it is outputting serial commands. Can sniff that for G03 output and count it with a PS script pretty easy.

So real talk - on the hardware side, I think the simplest solution would be to tap into pins 1 and 2 (using those numbers as an example) on the wiring between the plasma cutter and CNC controller because all it does is open and close the circuit.

Would I be correct to assume that to be the least intrusive method?

From there I guess I would just need to figure out what to use to read said inputs. Do I need to go as much as getting a raspberry pi for this? I'm a complete novice to micro anything if we're gonna make this happen.

I mean I could do that way with an Arduino I suppose pretty easy. How do you load commands into this machine?

The software for the controller contains not just the means for reading said g-code to run the table, but also handles the CAM side of things.

I no longer use Fusion for my CAM as it's all seamless now. All I do is bring over my DXF to it.

Oh that's interesting and maybe a bit limiting if you cant manually adjust the cut path. I guess if it's processing it all in one then there's no computer putting out commands to sniff. Then yeah Arduino is the way. That would be cake to program though

Looking at Arduino kits now - only tough part is finding a small case that'll fit with the included display. That display the kit comes with will easily suffice so no need to get fancy.

The old slush boxes on those seem pretty unlikeable too - they were almost too dumb to die.

I had an auto '99 Prerunner when I was 19 or so, threw it in reverse going ~40mph once by accident. Horrible noise, jerking and the truck stalled but started back up and no issues. Well..there may have been long term, who knows. Only had it a couple years

Didn't have time to take photos because I was scurrying, but just spent the afternoon cleaning a massive ant nest out of my mom's Outback for her. They'd nested inside the, well they're not really frame rails since unibody, but yeah, in the drivers side one. Anyway, fucking fistfuls of live ants. And eggs. Pulled all the exterior lower trim and pumped windex water into it and flushed a few times. They also scattered into the wheel well so I had to rip that off double quick and more fell out.
Insult to injury, I was letting it dry and went out to pick up the plastic clips that'd flown around when I was rushing and there was line of the little shits carrying eggs across the driveway back into her car!
Once again the moral of the story is that ants are assholes. Very impressive, tiny, intrusive assholes.
