Any woodworkers?

Have you tried to orient the grain differently? I hate it when this happens or it blows out on the end grain. It is an interesting shape. Any hints on what it is for?

 

You could run a dowel from the end piece to support it. Cap it with wood or use different wood. Just throwing ideas

 

Use the plastic frame as backing. Tape the uprights and finalize the bottom straight, then tape the bottom straight and tape the outside of the bottom vertical bars and work the inside of those uprights, then tape the insides of the bottom verticals and work the outside of the verticals. That way there is always some part of the U-shape supported by plastic backing.

AND ...

Try to get the grain going "horizontal to the picture". Note this picture, cutting most of the middle of the plaque out. When I (accidentally) made a test copy out of poplar with grain going horizontal the top arch snapped off. Final product was walnut with grain going vertical (mostly).

And when using the router on the inside and outside of the arch I extended small amounts off a working board and held the rest down to the working board with clamps.

 

Funny ... describing how to use the plastic pattern for the "L" (not sure what exactly it is) tells me that when I make another "center cut out" make a plastic pattern to provide backing support and buy a flush-bit for the router. See ... I learned from a combination of my own mistake and from the "mis-adventures" of others. I be smartly!

 

It's a stand for cutting boards... two for each board.. the pine board grain is oriented roughly 45 degrees compared to the walnut.
If I were to rotate it 90 degrees then the long part of the L would be vulnerable to breaking vs the short arm.
The dowel idea would likely work but defeats the idea of whipping out 50 of them in an afternoon.

Maybe thicker board? This looks like walnut in video but thicker than 3/4

 

I can't watch that.. but the walnut I had was an inch thick.. HAHA

I also wouldn’t hesitate to just glue that broken joint. It’s not like that stand is going to be loadbearing

 

I think I am going to try and find a different bit first.. and I've been toying with some other designs in my head.. time will tell I suppose.

 

3 panels glued up today. 1 6/4 cherry and two 4/4 hard maple. It is in the high 90’s out here and I am headed to the pool.

 

Any one got 3/8 walnut or maple for sale?

 

I was finally able to look at this ... my work has so many things blocked. The listing is for the template itself...which I've already make, but in the first video I noticed they are using a different router bit. I'll have to order one and see if it provides different results

 

Looks like a 1/4 flush trim compression bit in that Etsy add. I have a 1/2 version with removable top and bottom bearings and it is amazing. I also have a couple of 1/4 versions that I have not used yet. Mine are all cheap versions, but work great.

 

What bit do you have now?
