Hey everyone, I’m new here. Looking for everyone’s thoughts on off-roading mild-intermediate trails without any aftermarket suspension/lift and sliders/skids. How worried should I be about breaking something on the undercarriage of my truck? Specifically the oil pan and other important components underneath. I know there will always be risk, but how likely is it? Should I just suck it up and get skids/sliders? Hopefully I don’t sound like too much of a newbie lol, but I probably do.
Not sure if anyone already answered this question but if it was could I get some links? Thanks all.

Any tacoma can off road just fine. Avoid heavy rocks and avoid water that goes over the toyota logo on the wheel.

I've offroaded quite a few stock trucks with no issues. I just make sure to deflate the tires a bit 20psi and bring a compressor to pump them back up after.

You need protection for heavy rocky terrain, but don't start there, just find service roads to start and see how it goes.

Ideally find a buddy or a local offroad group to learn with.

Loaded question. What are you trying to do? Is this your daily driver?

I think you have a like half an inch less ground clearance than trd offroad. Some intermediate trails like a 4-6 rating on onX offroad will probably be too much for you. My one advice is to put your tires on rocks don't have them go under your truck.

This is my daily driver- any trail that could possibly give my truck an expensive repair I wouldn’t want to do. I’m just trying to gauge the line I shouldn’t cross- I suppose I’ll just have to start small and see how rough is too rough for me

I’ll keep that in mind- maybe I’ll set a general bar at maybe a 4 rating on onx off-road. I’ll have to do some testing for sure. Action is the best way to figure all this out lol.

Good tires and airing down then back up is a great simple start along with some basic recovery gear. Do some easy trails first. Go from there.

I have an expensive ARB--but I really don't recommend unless you do a lot of off-roading (weekly). Don't get the really cheap ones, ($50 to $100) they are slow and not made to pump up four tires at once. You will have to let the compressor rest for a while (10-15 minutes or more) if you do.

You can do very well with this one. Currently $234 on Amazon. (June 2025). Just hook the aligator clips to your battery and you are set

not sure where you live but we have a trail in southern california called Cleghorn where all the offshoots with obstacles are optional. Something like that would be great for you to test the waters.

These trucks are very capable stock. But there is a difference between being able to do it vs. should you do it. My father in law has an old Toyota pickup, with a 4x4 pressure treated front bumper, patches in the frame, body stove up in spots, sitting on 9.5 x 32s, that he leaves parked at my house. It was the wood and deer buggy. My ‘13 is every bit as capable, other than the old pickup is reg cab shorter wheelbase, but I can tell you that I wouldn’t do in my truck what I’ve done in that old Toyota. Like others mentioned, get out there and try it out

How we avoiding them heavy rocks? We wheelin' on the moon?

Me personally, I pick up every rock I encounter. The ones that are heavy, I just toss them aside and avoid them. Some are really really heavy though. Sucks, because one time I had driven like 3,800 miles to go on a trail, but the first rock I saw was so heavy I couldn't even move it. Turned around and drove straight home :(

This and almost everything you can think of related to your Tacoma has been discussed on TW over and over but it's okay to keep asking. There is a search bar on this forum but if you type your question into Google and end it with "Tacomaworld" you will get the best results.

    You know what I meaaan.

I guess what defines a rocky section? Isnt gravel just small rocks?

I'd say if the rocks start getting bigger than a melon its time to dial it back with stock trucks.

I've bashed in lower rad supports a few times no regrets.

I think when we really get down to it, pretty much every piece of matter is made of smaller and smaller rocks.

Hell, a computer is basically a rock we zapped with lightning and tricked into thinking

It's rocks all the way down!

Ditto for this comment explaining to people that have asked a question that their question has already been asked a hundred times.
