4G hate especially for the PRO why?

I thought I could get by without a pickup. I sold it after buying a new 4Runner.

Nice thing about the gen 4 Tacoma and gen 6 4Runner is the inventory for some quality used 3rd gen and 5th gen vehicles. Only put about 20 miles on a friend's 24 OR Tacoma, no offroad though, and just reaffirmed my decision to stay with my gen 3. Just rolled over 100,000 without any issues. Wait...I did have to replace my gas cap, it stopped clicking when closing it.

I've driven a 2019 Cayman GTS 4cyl 2.5T before. It's not as gutless vs their flat-six 3.0T or V6 3.0T or V6 3.6T as people "imagine." But that's what most online do, is read C&D articles and paper specs, and imagine.

I test drove the 4G, Canyon 4cyl 2.7T and drove my buddy's Colorado, and ended up with a RR with Ford ProCal tune. While the RR certainly has more pep, it's primary benefit is freeway entrance and passing ... and honestly offers ZERO other daily driving speed-related benefit vs my old 2G TRDOR with that sweet 8s 0-60 time.

 

I'll be fair and start with what I did like. The ride, very nice ride, but I have 2" lift with 33's, so there is that. The seats were also very nice, much better than my gen 3. They put some thought into what we have been adding, aftermarket wise, like trailer tow controller, extra switch banks for accessories. The crawl and mts are there in the offroad which I appreciate. What I did not like, and this is subjective, is the rear seat flipping up. I prefer the back of the rear bench to fold down as it provides a platform for the pups and hunting gear. I do not like the way the hood is designed; it slopes down in a way that just seems unnatural, but maybe you just get used to it. It does roll in corners a little, not as planted as mine, but maybe after suspension and lift that would go away. Too many electronics, I thought the truck stalled while starting from a stop to go through a busy intersection, thought the transmission slipped or something, but my buddy told me it was that sensor in the front, apparently the computer thought I was too close to the car in front of me and unilaterally cut my power. He said you can turn that feature off. Overall, it has similar lines as Chevy, I do not think it's an attractive truck. The truck feels lighter and cheaper, I know that is not very scientific, but the doors, tailgate and the truck overall just feel lighter, cheaper in a sense, fragile if you will. Govt red tape has caused manufactures to look for more ways to lessen the weight of new vehicles for economy and change proven platforms to appease the emissions police and I believe it continues to dilute the quality of today's vehicles. Lastly, I am not a turbo fan, having owned one. The warmup and cool down along with discouraging prolonged idling and the potential for extra cost if you ever need to replace it is a deal breaker for me. Heat is a turbos nemesis, and I live in the southwest with brutal summers. I know the cost of a new trucks is a personal decision, but these are pretty steep. My apologies for the long-winded post. i could never imagine buying a Pro when i feel like the TH is better in every way- and actually had useable back seats.

 

The 3rd gen Pro was the best looking truck Toyota ever built, IMO, and it was functional. Fourth gen is cool looking but the isodynamic seats diminish its utility and its simply too expensive for what you get, IMO.

 

The original Grand Prix (now Formula One) race cars. I believe there are also some bikes that use V4s.

 

Best looking? As you said IMO. Seats diminish utility? Not me, but dude doesn't look more comfortable without the iso seat. Rear seat utility (for passengers) in any Tacoma is diminished. Too expensive? Upgrade the suspension on an OR, put new wheels and tires on it, add the heritage grille, fog lights and lightbar, LED DRLs, skid plate, exhaust, upgrade interior trim... installed by you or labor cost, not covered by warranty, and all those mods will depreciate almost 100%, then tell me which truck is more expensive.

 

Certainly sticking all those mods on your truck would be expensive. Its just that an unmodified OR is the better value and has better utility for most users (IMO, of course). Regarding appearance, its all subjective anyway.

 

If you want a truck that more closely matches the 3g pro, just buy a 4g OR.

 

Better value, meaning less stuff for less money vs more stuff for more money. The value is the same based on what you want/need.

 

Love the idea of splitting hairs about how much of an investment a depreciating truck is as if these are retirement plan moves

we’re all wasting money on shit we want, rather than need.

 

The nail has been squarely hit on the head! Thinking mass produced trucks (even "limited" versions like the Pro or TH) are an investment is comical. I sure hope those guys aren't banking their retirement on how much their Tacoma increases in value.

 

What do you think? Maybe 10% of 4G retail buyers needed to replace their current truck or other vehicle? What ever % that's probably all retail vehicle sales.

I know, if you want a new truck or need to replace a vehicle, want to change things up, or take advantage of market conditions, but you said need.

 

Please clarify. 4th gen seats fold down, not up. What you don't have to do is first fold up the seat bottoms and remove the headrests like on the 3rd gen.

Yes, these were definite concerns with turbocharged vehicles years ago.

Modern turbos though, with water cooling that can continue after the motor shuts off, are a different animal than they were years ago.

Owners manual calls for idling for 1 minute only after steep hill driving or continuous driving above 100kph. For normal city driving or constant speed of 80kph or less it is "Not necessary". This is likely due to the wastegate bypassing the turbo when not needing boost. I see no caution against prolonged idling, probably 'cuz the turbo would be bypassed.

Not to mention you'll be hard pressed to find a modern vehicle without a turbo. So while you may not wish to make a change today, eventually you likely will

Not sure how a value proposition turned into an investment claim. Pros and THs will depreciate at the same as rate as ORs and Sports. Mods to those trucks will instantly depreciate almost 100%. Put your VIN in Carvana, get a price without selecting oversize wheels & tires and then run it again with. I got no change in price. Selecting "Modifications" added $600.
