GWVR with a Camper Build

    I have a DCSB TRD ORD 4x4. Th GVWR is 5600lbs.

    The FGAWR is 2940lb.

    The RGAWR is 3280lbs.

    I am currently sitting at 5120lbs with a full tank of gas, plate front and rear bumper, engine armor, transmission armor, transfer case armor and sliders. I have upgrade suspension with rear AAL and 2.5 elka shocks along with 2.5 elka coilovers, and 33.2 inch C rated tires.

    With my family loaded up I am sitting at 5730lb.

    I am in the process of a building a pop up camper similar to a ovrlnd camper or FWC project M. The camper should weight about 350lbs.
    This puts the truck at 6080lbs.

    With about 200lb of gear, we're sitting at 6280lbs.

    At 6280lbs the truck is 680lbs heavier than the stock GVWR, and about 60lbs heavier than the front and rear axles combined.

    So before I even leave my driveway I am overweight.

    I plan to upgrade to 4.88s and either deavers or alcan leafs, and E rated tires.

    I am over thinking this?
    Should the additions of 4.88s, bigger leafs, and E-rated tires be fine?

    Will I be setting myself up for trouble in the future?

    You're underthinking it. It's about way more than springs and how the truck sits.

    The weight ratings and payload capacity are there to account for way more than just weight bearing. It's how it will handle, brake, and cooling of the vehicle. Going over those will at best cause excess wear and tear, and at worst it will degrade the vehicles ability to properly brake and/or maintain control in situations where you need it most, like emergency braking or evasive maneuvers. Overloading can also result in catastrophic failure even if it takes time and miles for this to occur.

    Adding springs or gears doesn't address these problems. It just makes it more comfortable while it's overloaded.

    You need a bigger truck or less weight on it.

    I wouldn't waste your time building a camper for your truck. Build or buy a camper for a BIGGER truck.

    I can't wait to get into a more capable rig. I've done this, and still am, but don't wanna be. It handles fine, and I even tow with mine, but I know my luck could run out. We did it at a stop gap to try out and see if we liked truck campers. We do, so now planning a much larger truck and camper.

    If you're gonna move forward anyhow, I'd take as much of that armor off as possible. I've found since getting heavier, I take it on less and less extreme offroading, so I don't find it necessary. Kinda wish I could go back to lighter bumpers at this point, but I figure it just needs to last til next year when it no longer does camper duty.

    This is real life because if you’ve researched the topic there are several differing opinions. But obviously based upon your comments you have no real world experience just opinions.
